Hi I have a quick question, how are doctors from the philippines regarded? Do they get jobs as doctors or are they undervalued and work as nurses and such. I hear so many horror stories of neurosurgeons moving to america and the like only to work as a nurse. Do you guys think fresh grads from med school stand a chance at work in other countries such as canada or the US? Thanks

Hi! Doctors in the Philippines are professionals and before they get a degree, they must first finish many years of internship. There is 4 years of premed course then they will get an entrance examination, if they will pass they will have 4 years of being in the medical school and on their 4th years they will be junior interns in a hospital. After graduation, they will have one year of Post Graduate internship before getting the Medical Board Exam. After passing the Board Exam, they will have 4 years of Residency in a hospital. I've known a lot of doctors in the Philippines and they are really good, some can even compete with other countries. It is just that there are only a few that can get US MEDICAL Board because, they lack money. Some even took up nursing, not because they are not good but they can't have enough money in the Philippines. It is much easier to go to the US or Canada if you are a Nurse rather than being a Doctor. For me, doctors who became a Nurse are really good, don't doubt about there capabilities. For medical people from the Philippines who are working in other countries are really good.

I dont agree 100% with what you said. There are 35,000 who left the Philippines. Only 6,000 have found jobs as doctors. The rest are either nurses care givers cabdrivers and the such.I am not degrading anyone. Both nursing and being an MD are respectable professions. I was just weighting out my option whether it would be wiser to take nursing in the Philippines and work for a year then take medicine via student loan. Or just do my med degree in the Philippines with no guarantee of a job as a doctor.

I think it does not matter which country doctors belong to... It is a matter of professional conduct. Though things might change when moving to foreign countries because of obvious reasons..

Hi Hari111!. Doctor are profession thats highly respected, as long they had a degree they will had a job. Here there is separation job between nurse and doctor. They have their own job description so they can getting along really well. We are a large nation so we need a lot of doctor thats have not fully provided by our medical school, so in remote are sometimes a nurse do a doctor job because no doctor available there.

These are actual statistics 35,00 doctors left the philippines, both jr and senior doctors only 6,000 worked as doctors. The rest were hotel cleaners cab drivers or nurses. When you have a degree from a third world country it doesnt matter if you have a phd in economics or a top graduate of the medical exams in your country. It won't guarantee you a job apparently

If the condition like that why they leave your country. If I had degree like thats I will not do another job than my specialty. I mean they work hard to earn that degree but working as cab driver , its so unfair.

I've heard that doctors from the Philippines need to take exam in the US to be doctor in this country. Therefore, the doctors need to take other jobs that is available while they are not doctor in US yet.
