I love proverbs and sayings and generally find that most of them have some truth in them or a lesson to teach us. A few favourites of mine are 'Happiness is wanting what you have not having what you want' 'War does not always decide who is right but it always decides who is left' 'Life is a mystery to live, not a problem to be solved' 'Don't count the days : make the days count' Do you have any proverbs or sayings that you like to use or favourites that you feel are relevant to life nowadays? Have there been any sayings handed down through your family or one's that you remember your mum or grandma use?

I used to read proverbs and sayings and tried to implement them in my life. In time I forget how to say them correctly (though I know it when I see it), so I created my own sayings (invariably, though), like: "Try your best and if it does not get you what you want then it is not meant to be."

Thanks for your response jenny, I like that you make your own sayings and the one you have put as an example is a good one ..all sayings and proverbs were made up by someone at some time so maybe yours will be is use in the future.

Ha ha ha, I like your idea that my saying will be used in future. Don't make my head bigger, as it is now already swelling.

My mom used to say that no matter how cheaply something was priced, if you didn't have the money, you couldn't afford it. My favorite quote is from Isaac Asimov's memoirs: Happiness is doing it rotten your own way.

Mom grew up during the depression. I'm sure that colored her thinking! The Asimov quote probably isn't very widely known. But when I read his memoirs, I liked it very much. He was talking about how he did his indexing for his science fact books. He used 3 x 5 cards, even though there were indexing softwares out there. Worked for him...

Your Mum was obviously a very wise woman dawnald, and maybe one a lot of people could do with listening to nowadays. I have never heard that quote by Asimov...but I like that and I have written in my little book ,lol.

Hello Catalady. My grandad used to say "never strive to be the richest man in the graveyard." It basically means enjoy your money while you're alive, you can't take it with you
