Leaving a tip at hotels

How many of you leave a tip for the cleaning staff when you stay in a hotel? Does it matter how long you are staying? What about if you are staying at a timeshare? Sometimes we leave a tip, and sometimes we don't, and I was wondering what the consensus is (if there is one) about whether hotel guests should leave a tip, and why--or why not--you feel that way.

That used to be my strategy, but then I began to wonder if the person who actually cleaned the room is the one getting my tip.

sometime during the first few days i'll see them and their cart by 8 am and ask if they clean my room and i give it to them directly, i dont leave any cash in an envelope on the counter. i get it done within the first 2 days

I would check the local customs. In my travels I have found some countries where people do not expect tips and I will tip exceptional service, other countries the people are paid based on receiving tips. You should tip if you have received good service or exceptional service. I most often leave a dollar or two for the cleaning staff but not when I get only minimal service. If I receive very good service I will tip , but also make a comment to the management.

An excellent point. I have learned that in some places, it is actually considered demeaning to be given a tip, since the staff are "employees". I do normally try to check out tipping customs for restaurants; I will look into it for international hotels, too.

In poor countries the staff don't get paid all that much. I think it matters that I give the cleaner a tip so she gets more money than her pay gives her. A traveler from abroad can spread money into the local community. I think that ten dollars for one week or twenty dollars for a two week stay would make the cleaner happy. I haven't ever stayed in a time share but again I think a tip would be nice to give.

This is a good point. I always feel the need to leave a little extra when I know the staff isn't getting paid much (for example, i tip more at restaurants in the UA than Canada, b/c servers get paid fairly well most places up here whereas in the US they can make as low as $2-3/hr in some areas before tips. A Good tip would matter a great deal in some places.

I didn't use to, but I find myself starting to now in some cases. I guess I never really thought of it before, but then i figured if they are providing a service, does it not deserve a little something? (Esp. if they did a good job) I think the duration of the stay matters. While i keep a decent room on the road, obviously a one-night stay isn't going to be as much work as a week stay. Also if i get a great deal on the hotel i'm much more generous with the tips ;) But that's just my quirky 'pay it forward' type mentality.

I think it's a good mentality. I practice something like that too--if I can use a coupon to get a free meal at a restaurant, or the waiter comps us dessert or a beverage, for instance, I always leave the tip based on what the full amount would have been. Likewise, if I get a great deal at a hotel, I usually leave more for the tip (assuming it is warranted).

At one time i was employed by hotel housekeeping. I know what duties they are to perform. Whenever i stay in a hotel, i will gladly tip the cleaning staff if i feel they have indeed earned it. If my room looked like housekeeping hurried along, i won't leave a tip. if i feel they did their best to make my stay comfortable, i will gladly reward them with a tip.

I agree. I asked the question also about time-shares, because usually the cleaning staff comes in only once a week, but then they have a HUGE cleaning job at the end of the week (although we always tidy our space as best we can, because who wants to be remembered as a total slob?). As a former hotel employee, what is your viewpoint on this type of cleaning service and whether they should be tipped?

Normally I am a great tipper, I feel that people who earn tips is their main wage earnings. As the pay is much lower than the minimum wage. For some odd reason I have never considered the cleaning staff in a hotel as a tipping factor, I do not know why. But maybe perhaps because it is included in the room rates. I have to think about this one a bit more. Although it does bring up more questions for example how the people that pour your coffee and have a tip jar, or the people who bag your take out also have a tip jar. Where do we draw the line

I know exactly what you mean--that's one of the reasons I asked the question. In many countries, ANY tipping is frowned on, if not forbidden--or the tip is just included in the bill. I always wonder about that at hotels, especially U.S. ones--is the cleaning staff on a regular salary, or, are they presumed to get tips like waiters and so are paid much less?

There are hotels which prohibit the giving of tips to their staff. And they also prohibit their staff from accepting it. There are hotels wherein they have designated boxes for the tips and it will be shared by everyone. But as for me, when I am satisfied with the service of a cleaning staff, I do give them tips (most of the time secretly since it is against company rules). Although, I do my best not to make a mess in my room because I love to keep any place organized, it is also my way of not giving any burden to the cleaning stuff.

For me.., giving tips doesn't have to be by the rules.., or how is it usually done by other people.., If I get to stay in a hotel.., regardless of the duration of my stay there.., I would definitely give tips to those who deserve it.., If I am satisfied with the service rendered and the person was able to establish good rapport and help me out with even the little things., then they will definitely be given a tip by me..=)

If I actually have contact with the cleaning staff (assuming it is positive) I also leave a tip, but usually I don't get to see, much less meet, the cleaning staff. But I think your philosophy is a good one, and maybe that's how I will decide what to do in the future.

There is no hard and fast rules about leaving a tip. But the cleaning staff always expects to see a small amount left for them. I usually leave a dollar or 2 for cleaning staff.

Per day, or per trip?
