Lonely seventieth birthday

As many of my friends know, I am serving two years in Australia to qualify to have my pension paid in Thailand where I have worked and lived since 1998. On December 16, I will fly back to Thailand to be reunited with my wife. My seventieth birthday is on Saturday, August 28. Unfortunately it will be a lonely day for me. My only relatives are two grown up children, and five grandchildren on the other side of Australia, and an elderly brother in a nursing home about 200km from me. I was wondering if any myLotters have had to celebrate a birthday in similar circumstances? Is there any way to make this day more enjoyable? Please share.

I understand how it feels. It's been eight year since I have not celebrated my birthday with my family. For a past few years I could not be with my family because of my college and after that I got a job 2000 Km away from home. Things are so hectic in life, in last three four years I have forgotten what did I do on my birthday. Just a few phone calls and cake cutting drill at office, that's it. You can not enjoy these moments if you are not with your family. Still a few days are remaining, try to find some alternative or call your family members. If this is your first birthday away from your family, I bet, you will get a good surprise on that day. The way you miss your family, they miss you too. Especially your grand children, that's my experience. Anyway, I do not know about others, I will surely wish you on your birthday!!! myLot is a very good place better than Orkut and Facebook.

Thanks dollar. I have already had an early happy birthday from my eldest granddaughter. We plan a big party when I return to Thailand in December, and an even bigger one in March next year when we will meet the newest granddaughter, expected to be born in New Zealand in November, so it's not all bad news.

I guess it's lonely when you're celebrating it away from your family and friends. At least you still have someone to celebrate it with.

Unfortunate, the home my brother is in is 150 km from where I live, but I could drive there and have lunch with him.

It is a shame that you have to be on your own on your birthday! At least you know it is not a permanent state of affairs and that your next birthday will be with your lovely wife by your side! I would suggest that you treat yourself to your favourite breakfast, call your wife and consider driving to see your brother. You can make a day out of the drive over to see him. I hope you have a lovely birthday, just because you are on your own does not mean you can’t still have a nice day. Keep focusing on December 16th!
