Is it a problem for Indian Union if more states are created?

I certainly feel that certain people deserve a separate state. Tamil, Malayali, Telugu etc have their own state. But people like Bodo or Gorkhas do not have their state and as such they don't get what they deserve. Such people invest so much of time struggling for their political right (as least UT status), and so their region lack behind in development. But if certain region lacks behind all of India is affected. Should not we support their cause?

Many would argue that creating more states is more of a political issue than the true aspirations of the people. As it is I feel that we the people are not very aware and matured about our rights and responsibilities…otherwise, our country would not have lagged behind so badly and we would not have had to be at the mercy of undeserving, unqualified and selfish corrupt politicians. However, some movement deserve genuine statehood or at least UT status…I don’t know much about other movements but here in my own state West Bengal, there is a movement for separate Gorkhaland. While I sincerely feel that starting from Subhash Ghising to the present Madan Tamang all are crooks out to make their own fortune, the Gorkhas definitely deserve better dealing from the people of India. They have always been looked down as gatekeepers and caretaker or cooks and though admired for their courage and allegiance, they have never got their due. Their main town of Darjeeling is a major hill station and the tea gardens of the area both contribute immensely to the coffers of the Bengal government yet their lot has not improved.

I agree with you. The Gorkhas certainly deserve a better treatment from the people of India. Other groups that deserve better dealing is the Nagas of Manipur and Bodos. The Nagas of Manipur are often than not pictured as 'bad people' by the other group who are more educated to be able to write in the media. The Nagas for decades have been treated as second class tribals by the majority community, and so they have not been unable to write their opinion in the national papers. It's sad that they are not heard nor treated well. The Bodos also certainly deserve a better deal.

The entire North-East deserves much more development than what they have right now. Every year during Republic Day and Independence Day parades we just pay lip service to them by holding some dance and cultural shows but that’s all! Mainland India has never done anything to make the people of NE feel Indian…rather they are ridiculed as ‘Chini’ for their looks and the central govt has deliberately kept that area undeveloped to act as a buffer zone against Chinese attacks.

Thanks for your opinion. The buffer zone thing is very very correct.

Actually there is no proof that having more states or less states leads to more prosperity. More or less the calls for separate states are triggered by politicians who want to rule over a state. I think most people want to live peacefully and would like to have a government that helps them do so. But now with more and more politicians going ambitious everyone wants to be a Chief Minister of the state, so more and more people are being instigated to demand for a state. A case in example is Telengana!! Even within Tamil Nadu, there was a talk about breaking it to two states. What is the guarantee that any of this would lead to good or peace!! Nothing!! So if you ask me breaking up the states is not a solution for any such issue. Cheers! Ram

I think we need to take case by case. If politicians are the reason for seeking division in TN or AP that does not merit a strong case for separation. But if genuine development and impartial government are reasons for seeking separation there is merit in such demand. The Bodos in Assam, Gorkhas in Darjeeling area, Nagas in Manipur deserve statehood or UT status or something like that. Kanyakumari became part of TN in the 1950s because the Tamilians there felt that they would get better treatment by being part of TN. Now when other people seek for such political arrangement Tamilians should support them seeing how it was for Kanyakumari Tamilian then. Don't you think so? In fact, Assam, West Bengal and Manipur refused for division because their interest will be hurt. So both sides have their own interest behind their position. One group wants development and so they are struggling for separation; another group refused because their selfish interest would evaporate. After all the money meant for developing minority region have been eaten years after years by the the people, and if there is division there would be no one from whom they can steal their money that meant for development. My point thus is why should we let the majority continue to cheat the minority?

Actually no I do not agree with this viewpoint. What I think we need is not more states, but good honest administration. Unfortunately, till that comes by nothing will deliver benefits to the common man. I think instead of working to break India into more states, we need to come together to route out corruption from our system. That is a more critical task in today's world. Cheers! Ram

So do you think it was a mistake for Kanyakumari to be part of Tamil Nadu? Rather Malabar region should have been with Tamil Nadu and Kanyakumari with Kerala. Is that what you meant? You are not giving reasons why division into more states is bad. My point is that if we divide further that may contribute further to development at least in certain way. Yes, whether we merge or we divide if there is corruption things will be difficult. But for administration to be good it'll take another fifty years or more. My point is that division will help in certain way though that will not solve all the problems.

In my opinion why do we need our own state? We can actually follow the lead of the people on a state and become a part of the state itself? That way a state can have more production out of it. Instead of dividing it to many more states. Ahaha.. I got confused

One reason is that culture is important. If diverse cultures are not given certain space to develop itself by way of creating separate administrative unit (state) then the majority culture will swallow up the minority culture. And when such thing occurs there can be ethnic clash. After all everybody loves their culture. What would Indian feel if all parts of India is swallowed up by Chinese culture? How would Punjabi feel if all their culture is swallowed up by Kashmiri culture? Result would be loss of civilization or ethnic clash.
