Are there any other webmasters out there? SEO tips?

I am a budding webmaster, and I would like to know some good ways to get higher ranks on Google. I was using sitebuildit for year, but the $300 fee was just too much for me! I learned some good tips from them, but I would like to take it a step beyond building keyword rich pages, and thousands of backlinks if at all possible.
Does anyone have any advice they can give me?
