My teachers take pictures of sleeping students!

I've had multiple teachers who take pictures of their sleeping students and post them online! Motivation to keep them awake during class? I don't know... it doesn't really seem to work very well. A large number of them still wind up falling asleep. What do you think about students who sleep in class and teachers who take pictures of them?

You must not be in the US. It is a violation of their privacy and the teacher could get in major trouble for posting the picture of the student online. My favorite sleeping in class incident was actually in college. A student fell asleep so the instructor began to tell us in the same monotone voice to slowly one at a time quietly exit the room! lol! We did! WE got out of class early that day and left the poor guy in there asleep against the wall!

No, I do live in the US. And I'm talking about a college class. I don't know anything about it being a violation of privacy, or if the teacher would really get in trouble if they were found out. But that's a really funny story! Wish my teachers practiced that instead.

Well they do have us sign a whole bunch of stuff at the beginning of the class, but I doubt that it actually covers pictures taken and posted online. (Not that I didn't read any of them. )

It's not legal to put someone's picture up without their consent. The only exception would be that if they had all the students sign a waiver at the first of the semester! But it is still funny!

Hiya ally, A definite no no for me. I don´t think that it would motivate anyone to study more. What about if they get found out (Those Teachers), what happens then? Does the Student get to find out or have they already found out? Even if they do sleep in Class maybe they have so many Classes to go to and also have part time Jobs as well. So they would be very tired. Not very funny to take Photos of them without their permission even. They must be very tired to sleep I don´t think they really mean to sleep at all they go to class to try and learn but the fatigue gets the better of them.

The teachers usually show the students their pictures when they wake up. Most of them don't seem very phased. Some of them think that it's funny. While they may be busy and whatnot, I don't think it's hard to stay awake in class. They could do more to stay awake, and none of them really seem to me like they're actually taking their education seriously.

It depends on the student. There are some of them who, yeah... I do believe they're just exhausted and they don't really mean to fall asleep. Those are the ones who show up on time, take their notes, turn in their homework, and just so happen that during one of the lectures they accidentally decide to rest their eyes for a moment... and fall asleep. That's really not the case here though. These students show up 30 minutes to an hour late, don't turn in homework, don't take notes, and don't seem to even bother paying attention. They walk in (late), sit down and put their head on the desk and fall asleep. A large number of them snore too and it's really distracting. Being a student is hard... I know! I was up all night doing homework too! But I still get to class on time and I make an effort to pay attention. These students can do the same. Still, I'm not sure that taking pictures of the sleeping students is the best idea. While none of the students seem phased, it might backfire.

Hiya ally, Don´t know really I think that some of these Students can suffer mental exhaustion just from the amount of work they might have. Okay some might not seem very interested in what they are doing but a lot of others are. Students here have a very tough time too but I have not heard of that practice here of taking Photos like that. Whether they are phased or not I personally would take it with a sense of humour providing they did´nt put it anywhere else apart from showing it to me personally. I have never had the inclination to sleep in a Class but I know others who have but they are just plain worn out through too much stress and all the rest.

It's not hard to just wake them up I would say. Many kids are foolish and rather than being embarrassed by those pics they would probably just laugh.

That's been the case most of the time. How do you propose teachers keep their students awake during class?

How about a huge bell ? Or a siren ? :-) Seriously though, if kids are so disrespectful of teachers that they don't listen and obey them, they should be sent home. They're not learning anything at school anyway and in most cases just interfering with the education of other students. Some sort of financial punishment to their parents is bound to help matters too. Nothing talks like money (unfortunately imo), and I'd be willing to bet most of those kids wouldn't sleep in class if that meant their fathers or mothers would be charged a fine for disruptive behaviour.

You see... I'm talking about college kids here. Most of the time they're responsible for themselves. Their parents might be paying for their college education, and then again they might not. Most of my classmates are on loans and working to pay their own bills because their parents aren't supporting them. A financial penalty might work, but it might not. Since most of the students are on loans, they never really think about how much money they're spending on classes and drop out or fail as many of them as they please. One of my teachers back in high school used to slam a heavy textbook on the student's desks to get them to wake up. A huge bell might be effective, but I like the siren idea more. It would also wake all the other students up if they were nodding off. I believe my education is very important and I try hard to stay awake and pay attention in class. I also think it's really disrespectful to the teacher when students start snoring in class.

In our country is not allowed to use phones, cameras or other gadgets during school or university classes. And there are many students who fall asleep during them, including myself from time to time. In the elementary school or high school teachers woke up sleepy students, usually with taking them to tell the lesson for grade.(I don't know if in your country exists this kind of examination) But at the University teacher don't really care what students do, if they listen to music, play games on their phones or they sleep. But it is forbidden to take pictures, either by students or teachers.

Don't know which country you live in. In mine it varies by the school, and then by the teacher. Most of my teachers tell their students that they don't want anyone using their cell phones or other electronic devices during class, but will make some exceptions in case of emergencies. All my teachers really care what their students do... and I prefer it that way. If my teacher didn't care what I did during class then I wouldn't think of them as a teacher who took their profession seriously or really thought about the quality of my education.

The reactions are pretty funny when they wake up. I'd like to sound a huge gong and videotape them starting awake. I wouldn't post it anywhere though. I don't think that's nice.

I'm a teacher, and I think that's awful. It is not becoming of a teacher to do that. Instead of attempting to embarrass the students (and going against their privacy), the teacher should adjust and cater to their interests. I mean, if the students keep falling asleep, the teacher is doing something wrong. If the class was more interesting, and the students stayed awake, everyone will learn more - which is the point of a class.

Part of it is because it's an early morning class. It's hard to keep student's attention when they're tired to begin with... but I do agree with you. They should do more to make sure the class stays awake.

I don't think that's nice. i believe being the strictness of the teacher and punished the student the right way is the best. humiliate him/her in the class through taking them pictures while sleeping then post it in the net could cause a back fire to the teacher. most specially if the parents get to see that or the method doesn't work.
