Men doing test runs for Terrorists?

Two men were arrested by the Dutch Government for having suspicious items in their luggage. One description I heard was there was a Cell Phone taped to a bottle of medicine. Also included were several watches that could be used for triggering a bomb.
I think that this is a test by people who want to see what they can get away with. A few years ago a Dr. carried on a bag with some unknown substances in it and he was questioned but let get on the plane.
My wife has had a knee replacement and she spends from 5 to 25 minute going through security, checking her knee including a pat down of the knee and checking her cane and walker. She has all the proper medical cards and information for them. I am not upset because they are doing their job. I think the government officals who make the rules are too concerned with offending potential terrorist but are willing to subject elderly people and non Arab people to all kinds of extra security checks.
Do you think the governments are taking this threat seriously or are they putting on the appearance of doing something?

The most through country for airport security checks is Israel. I know that every traveler waits in a line and then is asked questions in an interview with a security officer. I was nervous because I worried I might not get a window seat if I didn't check in early enough. I didn't remember all the names of the accommodation I had stayed in. The security officer had me taken away. They went and did a very detailed search of my baggage. Of course they didn't find anything because I am an innocent traveler. They let me go eventually and I almost missed my flight.
These days the security team and the customs officers are on the look out for suspicious items in the luggage. What you describe might well have been a test done for terrorist activity. It is terrible that people like your wife get a though check and yet some criminals are not detected. I feel sorry for normal Arab people because they get more checks than the average person. A black man that is English and married to an Australian lady always gets lots of comments from the immigration officers. One said to him they they got a lot of problems with people from his part of the world meaning Nigeria.
It must be a challenging job to stop of terrorists because many travelers are going through the airport all the time.
