Do you have an idea why Depression is considered as one of the Disease instead a weakness. Some Experts Psychologist express such findings and I was surprised because the only thing I've knew about depression is part of human weakness when you felt stress and experience traumatic incident.

Depression can be chemical. :) But I have news for you. You can use normal means to change the chemical patterns of your body. Depression is really really ugly. You feel as if you are in a valley of sadness and can't get out of it and everyone thinks you're just lazy. I wouldn't wish it upon my worse enemy.

So it means depression is already a disease that is acquired when you are born. Correct me if I am wrong. And if it's true if you had depression since you were a baby you can't literally shake it off or get away from it because it is inborn and you already had it in your system and it may resurfaced always because you had it inside you. I would rather consider it as weakness because it is something that you can changed any given time. You can actually defeat depression if you really just have to take your time to do it. After all your mind is powerful you can do everything.

you'd like to THINK that it's a weakness. the reason you'd like to think that is because that way you can tell yourself that it won't ever happen to you, because you won't let it. well it's not like that. people don't develop depression through a fault of their own. it's a medical condition. you can't avoid it through behaviour or positive thinking. if you have a chemical imbalance in your body, that's not your fault. so it can happen to anyone. you'd better hope it never happens to you. I assure you, even though you'd rather consider it a weakness, I know it's not. because I've had to live with it my whole life, and I am not weak, and did nothing to bring it on myself.

the Depression you are referring to that is inborn is...yes an illness that can be treated. it doesn't necessarily mean the Bipolar type. as you said the mind is a powerful thing, when in a depressive state, it could be a dangerous thing. the depression you refer as weakness... well people just refer to it as weakness since its symptoms are similar to that but if it already disturbs our normal functioning then medical attention should be seek. http://www.depression.com/ --- you may check this out if you have more questions. or just search for it in the internet.

depression IS an illness. not a weakness. very often it's the strongest people that suffer from Depression. it's a disease, it has a medical cause. it's not about someone not being strong enough to handle a situation, it's about part of the brain not working right. when you suffer from depression, everything in your life can be perfect. you can have a wonderful family, great friends, a job you love with no stress that pays well. and you can still be completely and utterly miserable. there's no reason why you are, except that your brain produces feelings of sadness even without cause. it's a horrible thing to suffer from, and I should know. and I'm not a weak person. I've been through a lot of awful things in my life and survived them. I am not weak. would you consider diabetes or athsma or nut allergy to be a character weakness? of course not, and neither is depression. and when you suffer from depression, it means you HAVE to be strong because of what you're dealing with. so everything you thought you knew about depression was wrong. and this is why there is so much stigma about illnesses of the brain. because people think you're just not strong. if you break a leg, people accept that as a medical issue. when you're depressed they think you have a character flaw, and it's NOT true. it's just as much a medical issue. I hope you no longer consider the illness of depression to be a character weakness, and have more compassion to those of us that have to be strong and live with it.

yes it's a disease. i remembered the so-called "bipolar" depression because of your discussion. it was discussed in our psychology class way back in college. it's a disorder in which the person who has this disorder experience extreme mood swings. For example, a person who is so happy right now tends to change the mood into being lonely, angry, etc. in a short period of time. so yeah depression categorized as a disease but i also think it can also be considered as a weakness, or can be both! hehe!

It can really affect the state of the mind of a person and its really hard to deal with it especially if that person is too emotional.

Depression can be more than a response to a particular incident, it can be a life-long dibilitating illness that can effect every aspect of your life - if you let it. There are also several different types of depression: post natal depression (PND), depression, bi-polar (previous known as manic depression) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). All of them effect a person differently. I have been unfortunate enough to have gone through all of these different types of depression throughout my life, mainly over the past 23 years. Depression is difficult to deal with at first and can make you feel like an extremely weak-minded person which, in turn, makes you feel more depressed. It's a vicious cycle that can ultimately consume you if you don't seek the proper treatment, either by seeing a Pyschologist (sp??) or by taking medication, sometimes both is needed. The reason depression is classed as a disease, or mental illness, is because it can make you physically sick - you stop eating, drinking and taking care of yourself and you miss any vital warning signs your body may be giving out if it is unwell. The mind is a powerful tool, never under-estimate that. Depression can also be caused by hormonal imbalance as well as by a wonky thyroid gland. Both of these are often overlooked when it comes to diagnosing depression, yet both of them are so very important to a person's overall health. Depression can be triggered by things. For me, all it takes is to see a child without an intellectual disability as both of my boys have autism. Thankfully, I take my "happy pills" every night to help me overcome the feeling of being a failure so that I can get on with my life =D Hope this helps ;-)

Thanks mate =D I consider myself one of the "lucky" ones as I am very aware of when I am having a "depressive moment". So that I don't contaminate my hubby and my boys happiness when this happens, I normally go and meditate (or something equally relaxing to clear the mind). All the best =D

Depression is consedered as a disease because it does affect both sides at once:psychological side and physical side. When we are in depression stat, we lose all desirs of doing things such us going out with friends, paying some games, having fun with people .. we lose also the desir of eating, which contributes to serious degradations on our health. Add to this, depression makes your body feels lazy, too lazy that it couldn't achieve some of its functions like assuring a good respiration, a good digestion and even a good blood circulation .. It is a serious desease! However, it can be avoided by being actif and ambitious all the time, by having a hight self-estime and never allowing something to distabilize you. Have a nice day.

actually, you can be active, ambitious and have good self esteem and still suffer from depression. it's a chemical imbalance of the brain, and ANYONE can suffer from it.

Depression is always thought to be an extreme state of sadness, but there is a vast difference. The person with clinical depression does not have any reason for his dark or lonely feelings. He could be in a happy family surrounded with good frinds and still be depressed. As i said no reason at all. Whereas Sadness is a transient feeling that passes as we come to terms with our troubles or hard circumstances. But there is a reason and logic for this feeling. Hence Depression is treaded as a Disease rather than a weakness.

good question is this you posted. this just is a kind of talking about depression from experts who are search and develop the disease or their studying.supposed that all people are very hungry and all the people are in the same situation ,meeting the same problems that is lack food and make people feel hungry, then now the depression will win ?no ,I will bet say that hungry will win ,and the depression will disappear for ever.that depression could take on just depends on the objects that people could get .

That is a good question. I was reading my psychology book and it says it is a disease because some people are born with the genes to have depression. They say depression can be caused either biologically or socially or both. But it's that nature vs. nurture issue that they always debate about. At first I didn't think people could be born that way, but then I would meet friends that would have to take medication... and nothing bad ever happened to them. It is quite odd. Have a great day Sphinx30!

yes, Depression is actually an illness of the mind or psych. Lay people just call this weakness or feelings of sadness as depression since it stems from that. That weakness you say that you felt from traumatic experience may be the cause of depression, but not depression itself. it becomes depression when it is just left as it is and hinders us to function normally. the good thing about our modern world is that we could just search this in the internet. so if there are still some things that you;d like to find out about depression you can just surf it up. ^^, have a nice day.

I'm not really sure why they consider it an illness but I know I have had it for quite a few years, as has my mother. I'm not sure where it came from, there are a few events that could've started it but some days I feel better than others. I use to take medicine for it but I don't really do that much anymore. I still feel down and I can tell others know the difference when it is affecting me more on a certain day. I just live with it and deal day to day. So I'm definately not sure why they don't consider it just a human weakness.

As I've understand they considered it a Disease for some factors that a person might physically be affected.
