No, I do not think Mascherano is going to replace either Iniesta or Xavi. I think he is a replacement for Yaya Toure as a holding midfield player. But even that spot has Sergei Busquets who has had a great last one and half years on the field. Now we need to see whether Mascherano warms the bench or manages to replace Busquets as the holding player.
Cheers!

I would have thought that he is the replacement for Yaya. Both Xavi and Iniesta play a different role, dictating rather than destroying play. My guess is he will warm the bench and in a couple of season, hand in a transfer request citing the lack of first team opportunity.

Transfers are made to make a loyal competition in the team and for having a replacement for every position. Yaya was sold, so it means that Barca needed another defensive midfielder, because the season is long and it is almost impossible for Busquets to play all the games from the beginning till the end. It is a position which requires lots of running and work, and lots of dirty tackles. So there is a high possibility for the defensive midfielder to be suspended and injured. So it is good for Barca that Mascherano signed for them, he is a really good player, and so Busquets will have a heavy competitor to his position. I am sure that Pep is a fair trainer and will give both the chance to show what they know and the better one will be the first pick and the other one will be keeping the pressure on him. This is how a player quality shows and grows, if he can keep his first team place in one of the world's greatest teams, Barcelona.
