Have you gone swimming anywhere interesting this summer?

My family and I visited Walden Pond for the first time this summer, and got to swim in the lake made famous by Thoreau. Although it has become a tourist spot, and is visited by thousands of people a week, it is still a beautiful spot, and quite pristine, considering. It is a very pretty lake, surrounded by thick green woods. We were there at sunset, so that made it even prettier, and, since it was late August, some of the leaves were beginning to turn red and orange, which added to the beauty.
I just found it fascinating to be swimming at the same lake that was written about by one of the "great" U.S. authors, and to be able to tell my kids that I had read Thoreau's book when I was in school. They are a little too young to appreciate the significance of that, but they loved the clear, relatively warm water, the soft silt bottom, and the little fish swimming with them. It was a wonderful family experience.
What about you? Any special swimming stories or neat swimming places you have visited?

I haven't been swimming this summer, not really that odd, not that fond of water, like a cat... However J. Frank Dobie was known to "hang out" at Barton Springs Pool, and included some of the local celebs hanging with him. I have swum there in the past - personally I find the water too cool for my tastes. 68º is about 15º below my preferred water temp for swimming...

That's a little cold for me too, although I love swimming in cool(er) water. Did you ever get to see Dobie at the lake, or was that before your time? Thsnks for the links--Barton Springs Pool sounds lovely.

Sounds great--I bet the air was clear and the water really warm. Where is it located?

me, my family, and friends like to swim a lot. but only in swimming pool resorts and sometimes on beaches. here in the philippines we usually go to laguna, bulacan, and pangasinan. i haven't been to Boracay white beach - it's the best here in the philippines - i wish to spend my honeymoon there, like my sister. swimming in a lake and waterfall is also my absolute dream. the waters is just amazing!

I went swimming at a resort in the Philippines many years ago called Puerto Azul (sp) but I believe it has shut down. We also went swimming in a mountain lake near Taal volcano--very beautiful, but cold. I have heard Boracay is gorgeous, but have not had the chance to see it yet--someday, I hope.

I swam locally in the sea this year, exercise advised by the doctor after a hip operation. We do not have much of a beach but the sea is beautiful and we do get to swim with the occasional fish. I snorkel so that I can keep my head down and have no need to come up for air. The beach is never full, sometimes we have been the only ones there.
