My father used to sing me that song when I was a kid and I had always loved it. When I grew up, I he taught me how to sing and play the guitar. I learned how to play this song, and I started to wonder, what does the sound of silence mean.?

The sound of Silence was always my favorite Simon and Garfunkel song. it is just beautiful song that is so haunting at the same time. I have never thought of silence as having a sound until this song comes to my mind. I'm sure we all have different ideas of what the sound of silence means. For me, it how we see the world around us and how we react to it. We can be in a crowd and still not be seen. We can shout at the tops of our lungs and still not be heard. Silence can be a strong sound that is never understood.

"Hello darkness my old friend,..." What a song. I grew up with this as my father was aa huge Simon and Garfunkel fan. Then in 1996 just as I was entering adulthood a South African band with the name of The Awakening covered this song in a Gothic style of music on the album Risen. This basically allowed a new generation of South Africans to appreciate a timeless classic in a modern version. The song I do believe has a religious theme. As the exact meaning of it I don't know. Amazing song though.
