Sometimes, I feel that I have the capability in learning many foreign languages and also it will very useful if I can speak many languages. Come to my mind, when I learn foreign languages, absolutely I will face one thing that I dislike very much that is grammar. Do I need to study grammar to be able to speak many languages or just try some vocabularies without studying grammar?

of course... we can't really say that we've fully learned this particular language if our grammar is like a car doing 100mph on a curvy road. grammar for me is the most difficult branch in learning new languages... not that i'm about to embark on this tiresome journey. lol! but if that's your thing then go for it. it's very beneficial. :)

Yes, I think a basic sense of grammar is quite essential for communication unless you choose to risk being misconstrued anytime. If you are truly interested in the language, you would pick up the grammar as you practice the language and start spending time with it. It's not so much of an issue once you have the passion inherent in you to pursue the language. Good luck!

Yes, it is necessary to learn all aspects and facets of a language in order to communicate correctly. You can fake it, but you may make some serious mistakes by so doing, and unwittingly insult someone.

Yah grammar is an indispensable element when someone tries to learn new language. The knowledge of basic grammar like proper sentence construction, right subject and verb agreement, tenses, articles, use of phrases, prepositions, punctuations and many more are all essential for a smooth learning. Sticking on vocabularies is not a bad idea but its not really advisable as a main and only focus especially for beginners, basic should first be learned. There is no use of knowing huge words when you don't know their proper application in a correct form of sentence both for verbal and written.

Grammar is important after all they are the rules that one must follow in order to be profecient and sound like a folk or a local. The correct use of grammar make it more clear and understandable and listeners are happy when they hear the speaker who is a foreigner that sppeaks fluent the said local language.

It's nice to know enough of a foreign language just to get by,even if the grammar isn't perfect. However, if a person really wants learn a foreign language, then he or she must starts with the basics. That's where grammar comes in. Grammar is the foundation of any language. If a person is strong in the grammar of a given language, than he will be able to read it and write it, in addition to speaking it. It's important to know the grammar of a given language, in order to be able to understand what you are reading in that given language, such as periodicals and books written in that given language. With such polished skills, a person can get a good job somewhere doing translations.

I believe that grammar is important when we learn a foreign language. Good grammar just helps us to speak and understand a foreign language better. Some foreign languages are harder to grasp than others. Anything we can do help with the learning process is a benefit. This includes grammar whether we can see it or not.

No offense man, but I think you ask a very silly question here. But it may not be silly at all since you've gathered several responses. Of course it is really important. How could you learn a language if you don't know its grammar. If you are saying that learning the meaning of a particular in foreign meaning, then you are just learning that particular word or words. But if you are to study a foreign language, well then of course you need to learn their grammar. Jus like Spanish, if English usually starts with a subject followed by a predicate, Spanish is the other way around. So it is indeed very important to learn the grammar. Where in fact, grammar itself is a language.

Yes, I think so. Otherwise your language will always be kind of poor, and people will always be able to tell that you are not a native speaker. So I do recommend putting some effort into learning grammar, no matter how boring it can be!

Grammar or not, one thing absolutely necessary to be well versed with any new language is the way the natives use it. Just following this would help us learn the grammar too. Watching movies/tv shows in that particular language with sub-titles may help (of course after a basic learning of the language)

For me it is necessary to know the grammar, but first you have to know the target language(L2) first. Learn, practice and be able to express yourself using the L2. if you're already good it's time for you to know the grammar. But the most essential thing is to understand and to be understood by the people around. =)

Yes it is. I'm currently pursuing my Masters in Computer Applications and as part of the course curriculum I have to learn one foreign language completely in three years of my study. I chose German to study as I would someday love to settle in Germany, it's a beautiful place and technological advancing at a very fast rate. Also the economy is stable and the social atmosphere is great. The living is awesome and business has lot of opportunity to grow.

Grammar is very important when learning any language. English is my native language and I still have trouble with English grammar sometimes. In high school I learned French and Spanish and grammar was extremely important because it's basically how sentences are formed. It's great to know vocabulary, of course, but that doesn't do you any good if you don't understand the sentence structure. And going from English to French or Spanish is easy as far as grammar. It's only slightly different, but easy enough to pick up as the sentence structure is more or less the same. I can't imagine how much effort it would take going from English to Latin because the sentence structure is completely different. I don't understand much about it, but I think that it was the verb or such that goes at the very end of the sentence? I never studied Latin, but I know some people that did and it confuses me. :) So, yes, understanding grammar is very important in order to learn a language. Without knowing the grammar, you'll always sound very funny to a native speaker and you won't be able to speak the language properly.

A lot of my friends are international students. Some who live in NZ, school others who've gone back to Germany, Japan etc whom I still keep in touch on facebook. From what I've learnt, grammar is not the most important thing. Sure the english sounds a little rough, but judjing by their choice of words, it's relatively easy to understand them. My advice when learning a new language, learn the words, a phew phrases, a bit of grammar never hurts, but don't try and learn all the grammar at once. Get your basics done, the rest will come on its way.

i believe that we should study the semantics of a certain language. you may say the right words correctly but when you put the words into a sentence, maybe people will misunderstand you. ;)
