why the dogs turn around for more than twice before they settle down?

I always observed that before dogs wanted to sttle down or sleep they turn around and wave their tails firts.
Why?

I believe they are looking for he most comfortable side where they can rest and not have their tails being discomforted if laying on the wrong side.
