What's the difference between bi-polar disorder and being manic-depressive?

Family members and some friends have been diagnosed with these two different diseases and I was wondering what the difference is both in actual terms and in functionality. They sound identical to me but I think I'm missing something.

I was taught both are the same thing. Manic-Depressive refers to the symptoms of the Bipolar Disorder.. Is how my old therapist explained it to me, She said that also as the other person stated Manic Depressive was the older term for it, before it was recognized to be a disorder and more then just symptoms. - DNatureofDTrain
