Did the administrator have made a right move?

I was once working as an office clerk far from my family. Every Saturday afternoon, I travel 6-7 hours to be with my family.. And get back to work place at late night on Sunday or early on Monday morning. I didn't know my administrator do not like what I have always done at weekends.. He send me a text message while I was at my hometown stating that he want me to stay with my family and stating therein when will be my last day of work with the company. I just felt he was wrong. For me, it would be better that he should talk to me regarding the matter or send me a letter of termination, just to make it formal. What do you think?
