anybody who owns a blackberry phone?

hi! i am confused about how blackberry phone works. my husband want us to use this cellphone because it is free to receive and send text messages whether abroad or local if both of you are using blackberry. but i want to know if the service is still available even if he is at work at the middle of the ocean, where most service provider cannot anymore give signal to their subscriber? i heard the provider is AT&T, but could they still give signal to those who are not working land base? please share your ideas. thank you and happy mylotting!
