Today marks the beginning of our Jewish High Holidays. It is our New Years. It is also the year 5771. Today the book of life is opened and the Righteous are inscribed and they are sealed. The not so righteous have until Yom Kippur to put things right, and the wicked are blotted out forever. This is where the saying "May you be sealed in the Book of Life comes from" at the New Year comes from. Rosh Hashanah is a day of rest much like the Sabbath. The service at Synagogue is longer and the Shofar is sounded as it has been for the month preceding the High Holidays. This is the first day of our Holy Days. I will share more later. Now you share some of yours or comment on mine please... Shalom~Adoniah

Ksiva vchasima tova l'shana tova umesuka. May we be written and sealed for a good and sweet year ahead. I wasmso happy this year we got to blow the Shofar as Rosh Hashona never fell out on Shabbos. We now enter the 10 days of Teshuva and need to use the remaining 7 to focus on the sins of each day of the week and repent. I have no doubt that 5771 is going to be the 1 to remember for the good.

I will. This is a busy week. I just got back from services for the second day of Rosh Hashanah. When you are outside of Israel, Diaspora, a lot of the Holy Days are celebrated twice. That started years ago when communication was bad and folks could not always be certain they had the dates perfect, so to be sure they did everything twice. That is why we do Pesach twice also...Any excuse to take two days off work..lol Shalom

I meant to reply earlier but things prevented it. Thank you for this information, although I am not religious, I enjoy learning about various celebrations from all of them.

Well first let me wish you a wonderful holiday. I am a Christian so our new year is the calendar new year. We celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25th although many argue that, that is not actual date that that Christ was born. I don't know much about the Jewish religion but I believe that they don't believe that Christ has been born yet.

We would call Him the Messiah, not Christ, but I understand. The Torah tells of a coming Messiah that will rule the world in Peace, but He is to be a Man not a god and He will rule on the earth never in Heaven....The christians chose to change this and interpret this person to be a god and to rule from Heaven. This is why we still are waiting for the Messiah. Thanks for your good wishes. Shalom~Adoniah
