A Sheriff in North Carolina wants a data base at his fingertips to see what pain killers people are taking http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/09/08/669723/lists-of-pain-pillpatients-sought.html Do you feel this is necessary or do you think this should stay confidential.

no i dont think so, but i can see why he would want to know since pain pills are the biggest misuse meds out there, and there are so many people use them just because they are hook and not because they need them

but say you get a tooth pulled, get a small prescription for vicodin. Then a year later, you call the police due to a disturbance, the police have on file your use of a pain killer......

Medical information should remain between Doctor and patient. A Sheriff in North Carolina is not competent to determine who is abusing prescription medications and has no valid reason to access that data. No way this passes 4th amendment review. This Sheriff has also not really thought about how it's going to wreck his budget if he has to be HIPAA compliant.

I agree and good point on whether he would have the ability to be HIPPA compliant.
