United 93

Rightly or wrongly every year since 9/11/01 there have been films and documentaries about the attacks on that dreadful day, lest we forget. United 93 had been on before but last night was the first time I watched it all the way through. This discussion isn't about whether or not you think the story was true but..whichever way you think about it..how terrifying it must've been for the passengers and crew of that plane. What would you have done in that situation? I cannot think of anything worse than to be hijacked in mid-air. As for the German guy, criticism persists on how he was portrayed although I didn't think of him as a coward when I was actually watching the film, not at all. They were all heroes in my book. The only thing I find strange is that they didn't try to stop the hijackers until they found out about the attacks on the World Trade Center. I also think that if the bomb had been real (which it wasn't) on the hijacker then he would've blown himself up and the plane with him. I know the target was (probably) the White House but no way would he have lasted that long if the bomb had been real. I suppose in all the confusion the passengers and crew thought that the plane was being landed at an airport and not flown into a building. The latter would be the furthest from their minds at that point. I found out on Wikipedia that a lot of it was actually filmed in the UK - mainly to protect actors from media-hype in the US. I am quite proud that this nation helped in making such an important film and hope that nothing like this ever happens again. As for the Pastor, what an idiot. He shouldn't be given any air-time whatsoever because that is what he wants; publicity for his little church that no-one will ever want to be associated with now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_93_%28film%29

It was really hard for me to watch that movie the first time I saw it, but the other couple of times I have seen the film, I learned much from it. I think that these people went through Hell and they didn't know if they would live or die, but in the back of their mind, many of them knew that they were going to die. It was such a tragic day. I couldn't even believed it happened.

I do know what you mean. It was difficult to watch even after all these years but I felt I HAD to watch it to get an idea what went on..at least on one plane. When I was out with hubby and friends earlier we discussed where we were at the time the 9/11 attacks happened. I was at work and someone brought a radio in as the internet wasn't really accessible in the workplace then. Once I got home I saw Mum had the television on and the magnitude of it just hit me..as it all had been on the radio before that moment so I could only visualise it in my head. To see it on television..well, you can imagine what it was like.

I had come out of the shower because I live on the West Coast of the U.S., and it was early in the morning for us, and something tells me to turn on the news, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was surreal. Those people went through Hell.

I believe the men and women of United Flight 93 were heroes, they decided that they might be able to overtake the plane and save many people in America, plus themselves. I think they were very brave, because I do believe the intended target was the White House. I am not sure if I would ever be that brave, I would like to think that I would but until you are in that situation you just never know.

I agree with you; everyone was brave and to put ourselves in that situation is nigh on impossible, really.

I'm sure they didn't try and stop them until after they knew about the World Trade Center because in a normal hijacking they would land somewhere and there'd be a good chance they'd be released. Once they realized the rules had changed, they changed tactics. I haven't seen the movie btw.

It didn't help that most of the hijackers seemed to speak Arabic the whole time thus increasing the confusion amongst the passengers.
