Safeguarding our computer against those dangerous things is very important or else it could cause us a serious headache (esp. when it is being used for business purposes). I have used McAfee anti-virus before and for me it is a good choice however since it is not free, I switched to a free anti-virus software. I'm just wondering, is it ok to use free anti-virus software esp. when your computer is for personal use only? Compared with paid softwares, what are the things that are being sacrificed if you use free softwares? Thank you very much! ^.^

For years, I have used free anti virus and spyware programs, and all do reasonably well. Avast 5, Malwarebytes, Spybot, Hijack This, Superantispyware, Spyblaster, and sometimes the new MSE (Microsoft Security essentials. I do weekly quick scans, and a monthly full scan. Also use a free firewall (for XP) called private firewall 7.

...if you really have important files on your computer necessary for your business, works or jobs, then i believe it would be best to buy an anti-virus software rather than settling down on free-software..im not sure if it is true, but i think, free software have their limitations and may have some weak points when there are threats attack..but for personal use only, you can avail the free anti-virus software on your computer...

I think that will be okay for you to use free antivirus program for personal use only. Remember that free antivirus usually only gives you ability to scan, delete, or protect your PC real-time. It does not have additional function such as e-mail cleaner or spyware protector. If you want to use free antivirus I do recommend Antivir Personal Edition. That's the best (in my opinion) so far. As for me; I never bother installing any protection software for my business PC, because I have already installed Deep Freeze, so everytime the computer shuts down, no matter how damage the software inside, it will always return to the previous state. I save all documents on my secure server.
