Is there anything about driving that scares you? How do you deal with it?

I have to admit it... I really do not like driving on long bridges over water or in long dark tunnels... And sometimes being at the top of steep hills gets to me too. I am glad that I do not need to take the long bridge often and purposefully avoid having to go in that dark tunnel. If I have to go on the hills or go in long tunnels or on the long bridge I grab the steering wheel hard enough to later hurt my hands, white knuckling it, and might start praying. I certainly will play the radio to distract myself. I might drink some iced tea and I know that I will try to remember to breathe deeply. How about you? What scares you when you are driving? How do you deal with the fear and still do what you need to do, drive the car?

Driving can be a relaxing experience. it can also be hectic and nerve wracking. What scares me most about driving is the fear that other drivers aren't paying attention to their driving. This feeling usually happens to me on a dark and rainy night. it see headlights apprroaching and suddenly I';ll wonder fi they even see me at all.

Ah, the dark and stormy night fear... happens to a lot of people. Making sure that your lights are on and that you are alert helps. I have known of some people who do some mental tricks telling themselves that their cars are huge and easy to see by all drivers and then breathing deeply relaxing a little and going about the business of driving trusting that they will be seen and that they will be okay. It is interesting how often it seems to work... a self fullfilling prophecy.

Hello whiteheron! I have been driving for several years now. More than a decade actually. In all those years, I have really not been scared of anything except that of reckless drivers and irresponsible pedestrians. I am a very defensive driver. However, I can only speak for myself. How other people are, whether drivers or pedestrians, would be beyond my control.

I understand that fear of reckless and irresponsible pedestrians... I am hoping that they will be few and far between in your area. I am normally impressed by how good most people are at driving and at obeying pedestrian laws... It is interesting to me how many people obey laws in general. It makes me feel good about humanity. Thanks for posting.

I can't say I have any particular driving fear about myself. However I am not sure about people on the road. There might be a psycho in the next line looking for a car to bump into. The advice is simple - keep concentrated and aware of possible dangers. Everything is going to be fine.

I am hoping that the psychos stay off the road. I like your advice that we need to concentrate and to be aware. I also like your words, "Everything is going to be fine." Thanks for posting.
