is allowing its students to smoke in school, reason being that the teachers can keep an eye on them. Foothills Composite High school felt that this is for the good of the student rather than have them skip school and perhaps get into bad company. I believe this is a 2 edged sword as other students may be "encouraged" to smoke as the school seems to have 'condoned' this act. On the other hand this may be a good move if teachers actively monitor the smoking student in his behaviour and studies and perhaps in time to come, be motivated to do sports instead of smoke. What do you think? Is this a good move which just needs some fine-tuning?

Here in the U.S., student aren't supposed to smoke in school, it's against school policy.

I thought that Canada didn't put up with stuff like that in their schools? I thought that they were better than that.

hi rogue, that is a good policy to maintain but in this instance, the school in Alberta Canada has actually taken the unusual step of recalling the student smokers.

May be student's tendency to smoke is gone so much out of hand that they are now struck with a sense of complacency and state of defeatism. They might have found out that they simply cannot do anything about it. All you know these students must be smoking at home at public places as well. The onus to take care of the morals of the students does not rest only with the school. Parents and society too has a role to play in it. If the rules are lax then the students would smoke unabated. In some countries the laws are so strict that people simply cannot smoke anywhere and everywhere they please. In Arab countries they are not taking a kindly view towards smoking. May be in Alberta they have come to terms with this that if you cannot win the students then join them. Therefore, they allow them to smoke. However, it is setting an unhealthy precedence.

Thanks carpediem for BR vote. You are right, may be the original intention was to bring back back to school.

hi achilles, thanks for a very thoughtful response. It seems that the original intention of the High School was to bring student smokers back to school as I believe they have been skipping classes. But with these student smokers, they also brought back the smoke amongst others smoke-related issues. The school and yes together with family and society at large should do their utmost to contain the issue so that the community can have a positive impact on youths, the leaders of tomorrow.

I do not at a ll condone this as it sends a message to all teens that its good for you to smoke. no I would not let teens smoke in school at all and further more it lets the others have to breathe the fumes. Bystanders also pick up smoke in their lungs. the whole idea is just plain wrong. I would think that banning any smoking anywhere on campus would be a much better more intelligent answer to the problem.

hi Hatley, thanks for stating your stand which is actually shared by quite a few. Will be interesting to know how this will all pan out and if any good emerges.

Yeah I would be interested in knowing what type of feedback would be generated from the fact that it is okay. Where positive or negative would be interesting to know.

I don't think it is a good thing for students to be smoking in or out of school. this is an addictive habit that can cause great harm to to your health. Students have a lot of peer pressure to smoke. This should not be encouraged by allowing it on school property.

thanks sender for your comments. This is the general feeling of most mylotters. This unusual step is a first on many fronts and the school needs to ask itself the motivation of having the student smokers in school. I am sure at the Parent-Teacher Meeting - this issue may be a bugbear.

...i agree with you, there is a disadvantage and advantage for this act..disadvantage is, it's like the school is allowing their student's health to be ruined because of this smoking habits but the advantage is, they can as what you said, keep an eye on them..still, in my opinion, it is still best to encourage students to do other activities other than smoking which we know can't do good with regards to their health....i personally don't like it..=)

hi jhyan, if the school was to take the hard stand and not allow student smokers to remain on school premises, the school could issue Detention Class and counselling sessions to the students after school. This will not affect the rest of the student population with their smoking habits.

I don't feel good about it. Smoking for students and in the school compound simply affects the school's image as the country's education sector. Especially if it happens in elite schools, what's going to happen if any VIPs or ministers were to visit the school? What will they comment?

hi judge, I certainly hope that this smoking exercise in the school has got time and space boundaries. Definitely need a non-smoking champion to champion this smoking issue.

Since seems unfair to all, firstly what country allows young students to smoke do they not have a smoking of age rule. Secondly why should students who do not smoke inhale daily secondary smoke. I am a smoker and would never impinge my bad habit on anyone so it seems wrong to me and sort of weird to allow.

hi hwg, i think the operative word is student smokers coz students are at that impressionable age of experimenting. Will be interesting to know if the school can contain the issue at hand or even have positives on it.

It seems rather a drastic move for a school to take, but if you look at the postive side ot it, students in their teens usually refrain from doing anything that is allowed and there is no dare in it. so i look at it as a good move but something that requires lots of guts on part of the school. Its is also good for in a way cos only buy trying something do you learn the ill effects of the things, so even if someone want to try smoking, he will also be learning how it can be bad to his lungs, while in teachings during the class and hence ehlp them stay away for every. Best of Luck to the School.

hi markamemory, yup the school is taking a chance on this action. I am not sure how they are implementing it or whether there is a designated area for the smoking to be done. Definitely the school needs a timeline as to whether how effective this action is and needs to proactively engage the student smokers and not "encourage" the smoking habit to other students.

I do not like the idea at all, it will affect the health of all the students and teachers too. There aren't just smokers in a school there are also non smokers. In england smoking is forbidden in any public places and you can get excluded from school if you are caught smoking. It gives a bad influence to the younger students who will also start smoking. If people want to destroy their lungs fine but don't destroy others too, and that's what happens if they do this. They could at least have a smokers room or area where smoking is allowed, no where else and especially not during lectures in the classroom LOL

hi parrot, yup smoking in a public area is definitely not very sensitive to the non-smokers around us. I am not sure how the school is implementing the whole process but I feel that the school is certainly taking a chance or the population of student smokers is quite significant enough for them to proceed on this. I hope the school will do something positive in controlling or reducing the number of student smokers and have anti-smoking education in view of the many smoke-related diseases.

For me it's a disgrace. It seems that smokers have been welcomed by the society. There are reasons why they allow students but it's not enough and not accurate. They have to make the students busy for them to forget smoking. Maybe they tend to smoke because they're bored. There are numerous solutions, they just have to figure out which is the best.

hi cheneper, well said. An idle mind is a devil's workshop. Or perhaps these students are so stressed that they need to smoke but I feel that this is hardly the appropriate outlet. The school and society at large needs to do more to bring the student smokers away from ill habits.

i don't agree that this would have some good implications. we know for a fact that smoking is not a healthy vise and not a good one as well. i agree with you that this would only encourage students who don't smoke to smoke because they are around people who could influence them to do so. this is a NO NO!

hi ergfortes, I just hope the school will proactively engage the student smokers and that some good will emerge from this exercise.

this is not good for society or for any other student because a student who has no habit of smoke or he is unable to inhale the smoke what he will do . and another problem is that instead of bad company they will show bad habits with their teachers and parents also , this move is not good for a career of student...

hi barelal, the ill effects to health is most apparent in second-hand smoke and the lung/throat diseases often found in smokers. Perhaps this may not be such a good idea as student smokers may also be ostracised and carry a stigma with them - especially during this impressionable age.
