Orchid lovers

Are there any orchid lovers out there? I havnt checked to see if there are any prior discussions about orchids, so please forgive me if I have trespassed. I need to know if the medium that is bought is really good for the orchids. I have tried Schultz but I dont like it because there is a lot of coal dust in it and fine bits of wood. I think this clogs the roots of the plants and they dont do well. I wash it first to get rid of all that stuff but I think its a waste of money to have to do that. I have eventually ended up making my own medium, from stones, charcoal chunks, fir bark and when I can get it, tree fern root. Does any one have a home made medium that the have sucess with?

I don't know Schultz medium but it sounds to me as if it contains a lot of peat from your description. Peat, in case you weren't aware, is vegetable matter which is almost half way to coal, so you'd expect it to have a lot of 'black bits' and small pieces of woody matter (possibly heather). These woody bits actually help to keep the medium aerated and, even though it looks messy, it would probably be best not to wash it but to use it as it is. Of course, there's absolutely nothing against making your own medium! As long as you have come up with something that works, you must be doing something right. Many orchids are epiphytes and, in the wild, grow in the forks of trees where all sorts of vegetable matter (leaves, twigs and so on) have collected and rotted down to something very like peat. Most orchids, too, have a sort of symbiotic relationship with various soil fungi. Many orchid seeds simply will not germinate unless a particular fungus is present.

Hi owlwings, you sound like an expert. What I see looks like coal dust not bits of vegetable matter, the small black pieces are charcoal. They also have small quantities of tree fern root and tiny stones, and tree bark. I tried using it as is but the plants didn't last long. That's why I started washing it. Do you have a lot of plants? I have about 50 altogether. I have some that are indiginous to my country and are really lovely. I try not to spray them as I have a lot of tiny whistling toads among them and I dont want to hurt them. I have heard of sprays that arn't harmful to them but its sooo expensive! I havn't got around to buyuing any yet.
