Why did flipflops became a hit?

I wonder why flipflops have become a hit lately? they are cute alright, they are comfortable.. but well i just did not thing that these slippers / slip ons, or flipflops would turn out as a household name!! like everyone knows it, even people are willing to line up in malls for it!! wow!

I think the main reason why flipflops became so popular is because they are very comfortable and I think the best solution to go to the beach. The other reason is that they are pretty cheap, so you don't bother how you wear them. And the last reason I can think of is that they look nice, although they are so simple, but they look great on almost all feet.
