increase in the number of people in the States who are in poverty since the 1960s. And this is under President B Obama's watch although much has been said and made to improve US economic fiscal policies and government spending controls. The anticipated poverty rate is expected to increase from 13.2 percent to 15 percent thereabouts. Would this be another blow for President Obama and the Democrats struggling to persuade voters to keep them in power for more time for the policies to sink in. As an asian viewing from the outside, this seems at odds with the picture of America the Beautiful. What do you think? Does Obama and his team need more time for his policies to be effective? Is there a root cause to the economic problem? Your sharing please.

This problem started before Obama came in the office. Its main reason was Bush. I mean it took some years for this unusual recession to start. I do not see it as a blow to President Obama. The mess was already too big to be cleaned within two years. Even when Bush was in office he hardly did anything to fix this. Instead he kept borrowing money for the two wars. Apparently, thanks to Bush, when Obama came to office people started losing jobs due to domino effect of bankrupted businesses, foreclosure disaster, war and many many other things. Now we pay $2billion to China everyday. Things are still very out of control. Even today if some other guy instead of Obama came to office he would had same difficulty in solving these issues. Bush also ended up making the corporate world spoiled brat. They outsource majority of the jobs to third world country while us Americans lose our jobs. Actually, Obama had a plan to bring back the outsourced job or put a complete "full stop" to this outsourcing thing in the future. His administration also wanted to tax these outsourced jobs. In return, the big companies said that if that happens then they would just open more multinational companies in other countries. And of course, the republicans are there to always support these big companies. But somehow I feel that instead of spending time in health care, Obama administration should have first addressed the job loss problems.

thanks divineathena, well put. Yup, I think of paramount concern is job creation for the Americans and the outsourcing part needs some addressing. The national debt of the country needs to be brought under control - thanks in part to all the expenditure during the wars in the past few years in the Middle East. Yup, I agree that any other person who inherits the good office of the US Presidency will encounter the issues currently being faced by Obama. It is just how the bitter pill is being administered and to whom.

carpediem third time grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. President Bush spent so much money digging for those damned weapons of mass destruction and the adjacent war, he ruined our economy in 8 years and now the people of America want our new president to just wave a wand and fix it.Why do the republicans think if it took Bush all this time to almost destroy my country that OBama can do this in just one year?America for your information still is the beautiful but right now we are hurting with so many still out of work my own son has finally got a job after one and a half years of pounding the pavement , He is still in housing America with three other guys but we think there is now hope that he can save money and get an apartment again of our own. America the Beautiful never had the fabled streets of gold so many outsiders seemed to think, we are struggling as are people in other countries too.

hi Hatley, yup the many good years that US had enjoyed through Bush Snr and Clinton had perhaps caused some segments of american society to be a bit more complacent than others. And Bush Jr had continued that with excessive expenditure and great liability to the country. Coupled with the rise of China and some asian countries, the US economy has been greatly challenged in the new world. Perhaps also a mindset change is in order for the American community as to the workings of the new world economy, the driving factor being costs. Hatley, I am happy for your son having got a job after 1.5 years of pounding the pavement, definitely not easy, and certainly motivating to getting a new place of your own. Keep at it and I'm sure you and your son will reach there.

I think divineathena said all I really was going to say. This problem started far before Obama and will mostly likely be here at the end of Obama's term. We didn't get in this hole overnight.....other administrations before Obama's are very much responsible for the situation Americans now find themselves in. Bankers and Republican's have always been about the concept of "what benefits me most first" and do not worry about the lower classes in this country. Sad but true.

hi warmweather, I think US has enjoyed many good years during Bush Snr's and Clinton's days. Perhaps the American community has to acknowledge that bad years do come by and needs to go on an austerity drive. The US needs to rebuild itself from the excessive expenditure made by the Government and to curb the extravangance of the powerful US corporations. And the US has the means to do so.

I have said to others that people just do not accept. Obama did not cause all the down turns in this economics. It has taken centuries for other to try and repair and although they have failed, for some odd reason many think that Obama in one term was suppose to fix it all. In fact after 3 months people were booing as if he was a miracle worker and was suppose to jump and wave his want and all the problems were suppose to be solved. It will take more than one term and perhaps several more, if at that but this country is in trouble and no one really seems to one accept that.

Count our blessings, prayer and faith. It either gets better or remains just as is. See my opinion it is either one and well although everyone has to do their part to survive.

hi hwg, yup and I agree absolutely with you. Obama needs more than 1 term. I definitely think he is better than Bush Jr and US can get a lot worse if there is one. Perhaps it is better to count our blessings, no?

This such matter cannot be done in a short period of time it may years and even decades to fully see what is Obama's have started. In our country we are experiencing same problem as you are but our President have not even reach it's 100th day as a president but people are so demanding and keep blaming him for our economy. If we would only broaden our knowledge we may realized that it was not our president's fault this has been a part of our economic structure. We need to face economic problem to make that there is a continuous market trading of supply and demand. And poverty is just being part of that meaning more company will be opening for a job if the demand is high

As an outsider I may be lambasted for voicing my opinion but I am risking it because this discussion is in a public area. Why am I taking an interest in this issue Because should the US goes down the whole world will be affected. The legacy of borrowing money with insufficient real means to pay back. Correct me if I am wrong but I read somewhere that the interest rate the US government needs to pay is considered low, but the amount borrowed means that the interest amount is huge. The same scenario is happening in many countries. Two European countries are now suffering from the impact of heavy government borrowing. Obama and his associates need more time. If they can strengthen the fundamentals without borrowing even more I believe the positive changes that they, and the citizens, hope for will happen. Twelve years ago Dr. Mahathir, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, was heavily criticised from inside and outside the country for being different in facing the recession, like pegging the ringgit and reducing the BLR so that businesses could have more breathing space. His policies strengthened the economic fundamentals. Now there is still a need for a large number of guest workers in the country. As I see it a serious illness will take a long time to cure.
