How do you treat your dog? A pet dog? or a Guard dog?

She is Nebraska! - Hello to everyone! I'm gonna share you how i treat my dog! My dog is a Japanese Spitz! I consider her a pet dog but sometimes a guard dog! She is a pet dog because i allow her to roam inside the house, sleep with us, and sometimes, we treat her as if a baby inside our house. This kind of dog looks cute and appealing. I feed her with a bread mixed with dog food. But, whenever we have a party or celebration at home, she can always catch an attention and become the starring of the day. she had many tricks like rolling over, shaking of hands, sit down, and jump! I trained her as a pet and sometimes a guard dog. A guard dog in a sense that she is awake and attentive at night and sleeping hours. this dog barks loud and she don't like children shouting! hehehe! but for me, I consider her as balanced! a Pet dog, at the same time a guard dog! so, how useful is she! ryt?

Look at my 2 brats, they r guard trained to attack when needed. They are a workiing breed, Bouvier des Flanders. The dark big boy on the right has passed away. leaving the daughter to guard the house. When people come over, especially kids all they do is play.

The black brindle passed, he was 10 yrs old doing on 11 yrs old which for a very large dog is considered a very old age.

When I had a dog, she was a pet dog. Meaning I pampered her a lot. She was a pekingese breed so she was very domesticated.I cooked her real food like chicken liver or meat, making sure her food has no bones on it. I gave her a bath, sprayed perfume on her. and took her with me in the office. But, she was killed...:( We have dogs in the province and they are treated like guards dogs. Our dogs are fierce , that they'd chase a stranger who'd come close to our yard. They are also trained to catch snakes and rats, even fish.LOL. My father adored them but he can not be so soft on them. The only reward they are getting from him is a good meal and the freedom to roam around (that is, without leash).

I'm sorry to hear that, I can feel the sadness and i can imagine if my dog nebraska will experience that, i could not accept and i could not forgive myself. You feel very sad especially if you already have bonding with your dog. I felt pity with that dog. Why did you tie that dog on the window grill? instead, you should set that dog free and let it roam inside the house. he will be safer if you let her roam around your house. I can imagine how he was strangled. she begs for help and no one is there. huhu!

We have a beagle puppy, I'm not planning to train him as a guard dog, we'd like him to be a pet or part of the family. He's active, always sniffing, it's his nature to do so. As of now, we kept him usually on a leash, because I have a baby who crawls. But we let him to play free 30 minutes to an hour a day. Just a few more months when my baby learns how to walk, then we'll let him free to roam.

Just take good care of your puppy because when that puppy grows old, he will develop a guarding skills. it is the instinct of the dog to guard his properties. just socialize that dogs to your family and to other people if you want him to be your pet until he grows old. goodluck!

A mix of both. I don't like to baby my dogs but I do play with them. Also when people are around they are very alert. Besides one but I couldn't do much about her because she had a previous owner for years.

I don't think right you see your dog as a pet or a guard dog. I just treat mine as a dog, someone who i can trust and who can trust me. I think that is the good relation between dogs and men (women). Beign specific my dog can enter in my house (rooms, kitchen, ...), sleeps inside the house and go anywhere inside our home, but with limits. We don't allow her to do anything we don't want and she obeys us all.

that's good for you! hehehe! you have your point. but a dog has an instinct to guard his/her property. ryt? a dog will be mad if his/her property will be trespassed! so we should take note of that! hehehe!

Nebraska seems to be a good family dog. She does both the guard dog job and the pet job. You said she is awake and attentive at night. If you want her to be more vigilent at night, you shouldn't feed her in the evening. A bellyfull dog tends to be sleepy, so she won't do the guard dog job so well. As she is an adult dog, one meal a day is enough. You can decide the time of the day for her meal, and if you want her to be an effective guard dog during the night, feed her only in the morning or at noon. My dog, Binne is definitely a pet dog. But she has already started to defend her property (we live in a building with flats...). She barks when somebody make too much noise on the staircase. So maybe when she will grow up, she will become a 'guard dog', too.

Nebraska Eats 3 meals a day! I think that style of eating habits of nebraska makes her grow bigger than the other japenese spitz breed in our place. she weighs heavier too! but currently, i have to control her. i'm afraid she'll be sick! I'm worried of what you said of becoming a bellyfull dog. hehehe! maybe Nebraska can't bark and make noise anymore if she is always full.
