mylotters, I think the idea of odesk is great. However I am really fed up with others bidding really low prices per hour. This leaves the rest of us having to also bid that low or not get hired at all. I have seen bids as low as 83 cents an hour! I would never work for such low pay. What do you guys think about this?

Yes that is the problem with odesk but if you know that you have the skills for the job you don't have to bid that low. Bid to whatever amount is what you think you deserve. I've worked with odesk for 2 years and I only bid what I think is okay for me. I used to earn $3/hr on odesk but when my contract ended a month ago I stopped using it. There's not much good work there now a days that I can do unlike before.

That's the problem with Odesk for people from North America...we cannot compete with people bidding 2-3$/hr. We can't even pay our electricity with a rate per hour like that...

I agree with Baltek. I would never work for three dollars an hour. Minumum wage here is 8.50 an hour and I refuse to work for less than that. I do not understand how odesk employers get away with this. How can they employee US citizens while paying them below minumum wage? This seems to be breaking some labor laws within our country.

Hi Oscar, I am also a member of oDesk about one year. You must understand that oDesk makes jobs done all over the world and the global market is more competitive to any other country. There are also thousands of unemployed computer and internet skilled person all over this world. So, they always want to bid as low as any other member so that they can get that job quickly. There are also many economical down country, whose people are always agreed to work for such a low rate just to survive in their local market. Moreover I do not know how old are you in oDesk and what is your feedback from other companies that you have already worked for. The more good feedback you gain, the more chances to get a right job with your expected amount. Also there are lot of tests in oDesk to complete and as many as test you can successfully complete, you will have more chance to bid well and get a good task. I hope it will clear some of your queries regarding oDesk.

Hi Cheetp & Oscar, both of you are correct from the point of your view. You can give this feedback to oDesk.

Agreed that there are many economically strifed countries and people, yet Odesk being one of the premier service provider must keep a level of decency and standard, so that even if the work goes to someone who is from economically down country will have enough to support the cost of internet connection and electricity!!!

Hello Oscar I agree I would also never work for so little money an hour, I know many other jobs where I can get more :) Im also on oDesk and im so lucky to be able to provide some services where there arent so many in the field. For example yesterday I was contacted with a job which I got paid $30 to do and it took me maybe 2 hours in total or less...

I do translations from English to my native language which is Danish - and I would estimate that there is about 6 million people world wide that speaks fluently Danish = not so many people on oDesk offering this kind of service. If we look on the test which you can take on oDesk, there is only 21 contractors which is qualified within English to Danish translations - im not the best, but I have only recieved 5 star rating feedback.

Yep, sadly for me my main expertise is in French to English or English to French translation, so there is more competition in that field.

But yet as every other place, it is a question about building up your reputation. Reputation is just about everything in the freelance world, higher reputation gives more opportunities. But unfortuately this aint easy, especially not when people around the world constantly are underbidding each other in the hope to get the job. And with the economy there are just some that cant work for so little and still being able to pay rent.

That's why I left that site. The bids are so ridiculously low. I'm not yet that desperate. I have a full-time job that pays much better, although I do want to earn a little bit more. But if it's going to be like that, then I think I'm better off sticking to my full-time job.

Spot on! I just hope that oDesk changes its way of pooling people. Bidding is not a good idea because it forces you to not compensate for the quality of work that you provide. A decent rate is US$3/hr and wait 'til you get a contractor who would bid for less than a dollar! That ain't right! Good thing I got a boss that pays $3/hr. It's not that much but it helped me a lot with my finances. I just hope that there are websites that would give us the opportunity to showcase what we got at a commensurate pay.

Hi friend! Thanks for sharing! It's the first time I get to know this site, I'm still a bit confused how to earn with this site? According to the friends above me, i seems that it is not well paid? Or how is it? Thanks! Have a nice day, and good luck with your earnings!
