Are the rich responsible for bringing the poor out of poverty?

i mean, is it the job of those who are well off to help those who are in need? is it a social responsibility? some people are poor because they are lazy; others are poor because they were born in a society under chronic poverty. similarly, some became rich because they work hard, while others just got lucky and were born with a silver spoon. money makes the world go round, a sad fact for those who can't pay. so should the rich pay for them?

Personally it would be nice and considerate for the rich to assist in some way. However I feel that it is our responsibility and duty to attempt to bring ourselves out of the poor surroundings. I understand that sometimes, Lord knows I understand, it is impossible and hardly attainable, but I still feel it is my duty to try.

yeah. people should try to help themselves first before expecting any help from others. very true. they have to deserve the aid. yep, i've been through hard times myself. each experience wasn't pretty, but i'm over each and every one of them! hurray to that! and hurray to you too!

I think society should have laws that help people. In my country the schooling a rich person has is a lot greater than the one a poor one has. I bet there are many places where that happens. Society should award excellence and good IQ scholarships to study since they are small. It is also important that children have enough to eat. Malnutrition can be a cause for apparent lazyness. I cannot accept that in this year of 2010 A BILLION people will die of hunger in this planet.. I would not say it´s sad, it´s say it´s a genocide of sorts.

The rich should pay more taxes than the poor. They actually do now, but they have legal ways to evade them. They make lots of different societies under different names so none of them is so big. That can be changed I imagine, except that the those people also have power to keep the people poor so they can use them. Slavery hasn´t ended in the world. And as long as there are hungry people, you will also get underpaid jobs because someone will be willing to do it for less.

yeah i agree that government should work towards social justice and equality, but somebody really has to pay for that. i mean, should the government raise taxes to help the poor? if so, what kind of taxes should be made? stuff like that. how exactly do we 'legally' get funds from the rich to distribute to the poor? that is the problem. i agree that the government plays an important role with regards to distributing wealth and reducing inequality among people. they do that by opening opportunities to the poor by providing free education and health care. but the reality is far from the ideal. it's true that a lot of people die because of poverty, and they could have been helped or saved. the same thing is happening in my country, and i too would really want to make a difference.

i do know that some who are poor are very lazy but for most its just the circumstance they are in. i think it is up to the government, not the rich.

haha. i believe both of them should take part in it. the government's role is to 'legally' acquire wealth from the rich so that it may be redistributed to the poor. that's one of its roles - working for social justice. this is a very important function but it is often not delivered.

I don't think the rich people should be responsible for bringing the poors out of poverty. Everybody should make a living for themselves. The money doesn't come easy. You have to work hard to try to change your situation. I love China

yes, before expecting help of any form from others, the poor should work hard to liberate themselves from poverty. i do agree that some are poor because they don't try to make anything out of their lives.

yes, it's an unfortunate fact that some are poor because they were born with it. they can of course work hard to bring themselves out, but without the proper conditions which ought to be created by the government, their attempts might just be futile.

haha. you sound like an economist. there's this thing called the 'invisible hand'. it's like what you said, that if each person works efficiently by him/herself, the world will reach its optimal level of efficiency. but i don't think that operates in real life. as much as i would like the 'invisible hand' to be true, i would have to say that the world is not and would never be that simple.

That is actually a pretty difficult question. As you mentioned, there are different reasons why people are poor. I guess the rich are not obliged to bring the poor out of poverty. Yes, many of them worked hard for their wealth. But I guess it would be nice for them to help out because what in the world are they going to do with tons of money, right? Billionaires, I'm curious where they use their money besides bills and necessities. Some of the poor are lazy. However, there are some poor people who really work hard, even taking around 3 jobs at a time but can't seem to get lucky. Others are just unfortunate to not receive a good education. With all these, this really is a tough question. My main opinion is that they are not responsible because they worked hard but it would be really nice to help out. After all, no man is an island so we ought to help each other.

^_^ righ~ i just feel that, at some level, poverty is caused by avaricious capitalism. some people get rich because the poor who are working for them do not get adequate compensation. of course, this may not be true in all cases but nobody really knows to the extent this greed and social injustice leads to further wealth for the rich and demise to the impoverished.

if i have enough money, yes, i would reach my helping hands with them. who knows the lazy ones made them realize how really great to have the money so they will strive harder. sad to say for the unlucky ones but we can make change for them as well as long as have that much amount of money.

It is not the responsibility of the rich people to help the poor out of poverty. The rich may in any way help the poor out of generosity but it will not and never his/her responsibility to end up other people's poverty. Whatever may be the social standing of the person in the society is the product of hard work and perseverance.

hmm... yeah. it probably isn't the responsibility of the wealthy; though help will be very well appreciated. hmm... right. like what hardworkinggurl said, it is each person's responsibility to bring hin/herself out of poverty and make his/her life better. right.(^_^)
