This evening we will eat our last big meal and then begin a 25 hour fast of no food or water. Its purpose is to help us concentrate on what we are about to experience during the next 25 hours. It is not a penance or punishment. Just before sundown we go to the Synagogue and start the Kol Nidre service. During this service we ask forgiveness for everyone not just ourselves. We wear white clothes and cloth shoes instead of leather. Tomorrow is Yom Kippur the Holiest Day of our Year. It is a day of Atonement and Repentance. It is the day that we ask HaShem for forgiveness for the sins that we have committed against Him. It is the 10 day of Tishrei according to our calendar and it is the day that our names will be inscribed in the Book of Life if we atone for our sins. Yom Kippur is the day when even Secular Jews attend Synagogue. People from all over attend. The service starts at 9 am and lasts until evening when you can Break the Fast. There is a break in the afternoon where some folks go home for awhile, but if you live too far away, well you just stretch out in the pews and take a little rest... I hope you found this enlightening. Shalom~Adoniah

Thank you for posting this. I am a Christian but I'm fascinated by Judaism as the springboard of my faith. I sense the wonder and comfort of having such traditions.

Hi Adoniah, Thank you for posting this as I enjoy learning about people's beliefs and religious practices. I also think that the more we all learn about each other, the better understanding we will have. Most of the hate in the world comes from misunderstanding. Keep posting. Blessings.

People know so little about Judaism. I know folks that think that all Jews wear the side curls and the "funny hats". No one at my Synagogue wear either and yet they are all considered religious Jews. Many of them, Men, Women, and young people are capable of chanting from the Torah Scroll in Hebrew. This is very difficult since the Torah is written without vowels and the words are written in old style script. Judaism is an Ancient and beautiful religion. The services are Hauntingly beautiful when chanted and sung in Hebrew and Aramaic. Shalom~Adoniah
