How do you relieve stress while at work?

We are expected to continually work while at the workplace but we can't avoid resting for a while. How do you rest at your workplace? I am a programmer and in my office it is allowed to take a nap whenever you feel sleepy. Of course you have to finish your tasks first. Another way of taking a break is to go to the bathroom. It is quiet there and the silence is just relaxing. It can sometimes be a substitute to watching the view at the office's window. Another good way of taking a break in my job is to buy some food outside with my teammates. It is one good way of relieving stress since you can talk with your teammates about the difficulty you may be experiencing on your current task. It doesn't solve the problem right away but the stress is relieved at least. Now, how do you relieve stress from work? Share your creative way now. :)

Hi Wrangel, It is a pity that the boss doesnt realize that we are humans and need a break to start afresh and continue delivering the best in us. Where I work, we have camreas installed and so if I try getting a nap inside or do some ting that would relax me I have to keep in mind that I might be caught and if luck is not favoring, I may get to hear those creepy lectures too. This would worsen my situation. So, I try moving out to the bathroom to freshen up... yes, washing the face does help may a times. On other occasions (we are allowed only twice), I would go to the cafeteria and have a sip of coffee or coke (depending on the mood/need that time), maybe have a small chat with the sales guy at the counter and return back. Oh yes, I also make it a point to call up on my wife and have a small chat sometimes.

That's good; having someone to talk to. It's also a good way for your wife to know what's happening to you at work. :) There are some people who do not communicate with their family when they are at work and just sleep when they go home.

It seems we have similar line of work. I work as a Java programmer and we usually work on web applications. Being a trainer is also part of my job description.

Yes, I am quite a talkative person and feel bored when I stay silent for long and just cant continue out typing... I am a web developer, consultant and trainer by profession. Regards, Sids

It can get pretty stressful at work some times. I have to work long hours on some days, and that's very stressful. Yes, there are different ways to relax a bit and get rid of the stresses. My favorite way is take a break for about ten minutes, if possible, and practise meditation. I have found this to be an excellent way. In fact, after getting back home in the evening too, I sit down and practise meditation for atleast thirty minutes.

I'm curious. What do you do during meditation? :) In my case I meditate on the music I listen to. I just feel the emotion and the message of the song. :)

When I worked I found that getting away from a stressful problem for a few minutes actually helped me focus better on it to help solve the problem faster. Yeah a bathroom break is good..especially for those who's work involves standing the whole day like mine did.. it is just easier to think when your more relaxed. I was always ready for the lunch break and the other two breaks we were allowed. We weren't allowed naps..can't do much of that in 15 minutes breaks and 30 minutes lunches. But just getting off the feet was a big help.

At first taking breaks is like a negative thing when you're working. But actually it is a good way to refresh and it makes us work better. :)

I love having breaks, like lunch breaks or 15 minute breaks. I don't really get them at my job, unless business slows down enough for me to take a break or two..Or seven. lol. I'm stuck "babysitting" a store (this is my word, not upper managements', lol), so I'm stuck here for the entirety of my shift, 99% of the time, alone. I usually try to leave the stress I have about work AT work - and not take it home with me(if that makes any sense). If I am stressed with a big project or a lot of customers/work, I usually try to break it down into smaller, more manageable pieces. This tends to help. As far as relieving stress outside of work, exercising and spending time with friends helps, for sure.

That's good. You try to divide and conquer your large project. It really helps a lot since it makes the project more manageable by just focusing on the smaller tasks. :) By the time you finish those smaller tasks, you're almost finished with the project.

I rest during lunch time I treat myself with ice cream or chocolate for a job well done and I talk and laugh with my friends in the work place...Talking with them really lightens up the weight of a stressful day..but during work, we usually have music just to feel relax and fresh...=D

I forgot to mention we also have music being played on our team's room. We have a speaker there and somebody can share his/her play list and play it for the whole team. I also take a walk anywhere in the office when I finish a task. Buying some food is also a good idea.

Speaking of praying, I also take time to pray while in the bathroom. I don't know but it is one place in the office that's so quiet and the silence reminds me to pray. :)

I work at a job where I am constantly on my feet and moving about doing things. Sometimes the only way to relieve the stress is to take some of the medication I've been prescribed. Others, if the store is slow (I work in retail) I can run to the bathroom for a breather and sit down to calm down. I think, though, that the more you enjoy your work, the less stressful it is.
