Christmas outmoded?

When months end with '...ber' like September, we know Christmas is just around the corner. It used to be that christmas was fun and frolic. I remember when I was a kid I would watch my mom fascinated while she did creative christmas trees, like made of soap (cubes on toothpicks or bubbled), palm sticks, and others. But as a grown up, a working mom living on a tight budget, well.... (lol). I have known friends and acquaintances who after christmas (and other festivities, for that matter) are saddled with debts. Is christmas celebration, the way it used to be, outmoded particularly with the kind of economy we have now? Should we rethink how we should celebrate christmas?

I think Christmas is full of good traditions but the promotion of it has become too large. Perhaps celebrating in a unique way each year can keep it from being a case of over-reaching? Eric

i think everybody should. i do not know how Christmas became so commercialized. it is sad that it should be a celebration of the nativity which after all should dwell on the meekness of the birth of Jesus. or maybe it is true that Jesus was not really born on a December that is why..

Hi Bingskee! It is a thought, all right. And quite ironic that the meekness and humility of a Holy birth should be celebrated lavishly. Of course, i try not to generalize here. Thanks for your response.

Christmas was fun for me until I was 6, and the kids at school told me. "there was no Santa Clause."I never could forgive my parents for that lie, and ever after the Santa Clause thing irked me to no end. You can be sure I never lied to my kids! They grew up with truthful parents. Christmas today is just a money-grab, and a burden on those who (not knowing any better) over-spend on unnecessary and unneeded gifts, and put themselves into debt for the whole year. I once attended a Christmas mass where there was a Christmas offering, and before the service was over there was another collection of money to pay for the decorations which (According to the Priest) cost $8000,00 dollars. Now you tell me where to find the Christmas spirit in all this?

I do agree that Christmas during old days are more fun and exciting than now, not because of the tight budget but because on the spirit of the celebration itself. When I was still young, Christmas in the province is more enjoyable, we would just roam around singing Christmas songs in the neighborhood in exchange for some native foods, we never accept money then just foods. Then several weeks before Christmas everybody was busy going to the farm, getting rootcrops to prepare some native delicacies and every one in our place were very happy. But now I noticed some things diminished, but then I still treat Christmas just like the old days, going to the neighborhood and sharing foods. This is still my happiest season of the year.

yeah we should rethink about it. all it is now a days is revenue and sales instead of family values and what the real meaning of it really is. I know according to western tradition it was when we celebrated Jesus birthday but it's about a lot more than that to me. Christmas is family. Christmas is getting together with your friends and your family and celebrating life in general. I think celebration of the soul is what Christmas should be about. If Christ hadn't came like he did and if hadn't went like he did then our souls would be in peril all the time with out having a constant form to bestow upon. In other words it would be something that you could do for your soul instead of just for family. I think it's a time we need to sit back and look at all the things we need to change and its also a time we need to look at all the things we've accomplished or all the things we've kept from happening over the past year. I know people don't think about it like that but it's a way to reflect. Thanksgiving is always a month before Christmas and I believe instead of being grateful for just the one day we should reflect from that time until Christmas and on into the new year. It's great to reflect because you really realize what all you should be thankful for where you might not have gotten time to say you were thankful for it through out the year.

Did you ever think what Christmas is really all about? Christmas is about giving love to others and rejoicing for the birth of Christ. All the fancy stuff can be lessened coz of economic reasons, but the joy that Christmas brings to our hearts should never be replaced.

Hi Jenny! I am all for love. And I am not trying to be negative here. But it seems presents count more than presence. Though in my family, being together during Christmas is enough. Merry Christmas, Jen and thanks for your resposne.
