Hello! my dog has a phobia of nail cutting because last time, i accidentally cut the red part of her nails. Now whenever i nail cut her, i will scratch her tummy and i will not let her see the nail cutter because she will be afraid. What to do in order to overcome her phobia?

I would also like to know too. I have two chihuahuas and it's impossible to cut the nails for the female one. She wiggles and thrashes around too much. Nothing seems to work to calm her down. The first time my sister and I tried to cut her nails she squirmed around so much and ended up injuring her hind leg. That was a pain because we had to take her to the vet and it cost a lot of money. Way more than it would have if we just took her in for professionals to do it. So now, we're a bit wary of trying to cut her nails because we don't want a repeat of the incident.

I'm sorry for that. But yeah! it is true. most of the dogs don't want to be nail cutted because maybe they are afraid. I heard and saw on tv a nail cutter on which is just battery operated. you don't need to scare your dog. it's like you trim the nails with sand paper. i think it would be a good option.

I don't know, we have one of those too and my dog are completely scared of it. The moment we turn that thing on they run in the opposite direction. But you might have better luck with it then we did.

One of my dogs have to have her hind/dew claws cut,as she has a problem with gthem when they get too long, plus i would never try to clip that claw on her as the last time the vet had to quarterise it as she bled really bad when he cut the claws. My dog also hates vets and she tends to growl and shows her teeth when she is cornered or placed on the vets table.

i think your dog has already phobia with the vet. Your dog may bite someone who touches his/her hands or limbs. When cutting the nails, you should know the mood of the dog. be sure that her mood is good. don't make her mad. just be patient enough to cut her nails.

Anything like that usually freaks out my dog. I have a friend of the family who happens to be a dog groomer cut them, because she is well practiced with dogs, and I think that he freaks out less with her.

Lot of dogs are afraid of having their nails cut. I hadn't had to cut Nera's nails until her last year. She used to grind her nails on the pavement, as we were walking in the town a lot. During her last year we couldn't walk so much, because her feet hurt. That's why her nails grew so they needed to be cut. We went to the vet for that, and she stood quietly during the 'opperation'. I think you should first make her confortable with the nail cutter. Show her the tool and praise her for being calm. When she's not afraid any more if she sees the nail cutter, you can move to the next step: get her used to the noise the nail cutter makes, without actually cutting her nails. Reward her for every time she remains calm while you make that noise. Then you may start cutting one nail at a time, with lot of praise and reward. Make the sessions short (you don't need to cut all her nails during one session) and fun.

I have a tips to trick your dog dude! 1st - give her her favorite food 2nd - scratch her tummy and scratch her back 3rd - start you nailcutting while scratching her tummy and back 4th - you should have another hand to scratch her back and tummy and you will do the nailcutting. 5th - your dog will have short nails. another option is that, nail cut her when you bath your dog. she will not move because the water is cool. hope it helps!
