"hello" ...any substitute for the word "hello"

i think "hello" is the mostly using common word nowadays... most of the time all starting with this "hello"... is there any substitute for this ....? Any other word to compete with "hello" in number of time using per day? I think "Assalamu alikum" , which is the work all the muslims always like to start with , is the only word against this "hello" What you think , is it able to talk with our "hello"? Here you views.......

Hi friend I agree with you that the hello is almost indispensable specially when we start a conversation.However,I prefer to use the word hi instead of hello as I generally take hello as a word that is used to respond to phone calls.There is not a solid reason behind it.It just happens to be the way I perceive it.There are salutory words used in other languages that is used instead of hello and you rightly mentioned one.
