So my thyroid has been acting up lately. I was born without a thyroid, the condition being called congenital hypothyroidism. When I was prego with #2 my ob gyn had upped my doseage. I got tested at the end of my pregnancy but haven't gotten TSH levels rechecked. When I started to menstrate again I was tired which is normal but since my 2nd period since baby I have no energy at all. I can just tell that something is off. My stomach has also been kind of messed up and I don't know if that's related to this or not. My contacts have also been kind of blurry but again don't know for sure if that's related to my meds being too low or too high. I did make a dr. appt for next Tuesday. they want to run full tests on me. I was reading that I should have went back to old dose right after baby but no one told me that. I also learned my condition happens in 1:1000 babies. so it's pretty rare.

Congenital Hypothyroidism is increasing day by day. When you were born, the picture may not be as sever as it is now. But now a days, even a good number of babies are born without the thyroid or with one which functions sub optimally since birth. Within a few months, parents notice that the child fails to grow as fast as his or her peers, does not feed satisfactorily, becomes constipated, has dry skin and a tongue that protrudes like that of a lizard. What is worse, mental development too is slower. It is essential that the symptoms are recognized early and a correct diagnosis reached because if such children do not get early and appropriate treatment they suffer physical and mental retardation. In fact, thyroid problems can be diagnosed at birth by testing the cord blood TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone) level. This is routinely done in many hospitals now a days as such cases are on the increase. If the value is higher than normal (more than 20), the child is evaluated and treatment with thyroid hormones is started in time. I think your doctor is quite aware of this problem, you yourself being a victim of congenital hypothyroidism and would take necessary steps for your baby.
