Whats the best way to curl your hair?

Probably sounds a stupid question but curls seem to be in and I bought a curling wand that you use wearing a glove, you wrap the hair around it and hey presto a curl. I find that so difficult to use, especially at the back. Then there are different curlers, heated curlers, regular curlers, etc. My hairdresser reckoned straighteners for curls?? But my straighteners are too wide. Anyone swear by a method? Any suggestions would be received gratefully
