What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ?? Can anyone explain me ?

Whenever I get any article writing work, they ask that if i have a knowledge of SEO. I have read it in wikipedia also and google it but i cannot understand the SEO concept . Can anyone explain me please , and what is the relation with article writing ?

well its creating your site to be easier seen by the search engines making it higher in search rankings.

SEO is Search Engine Optimization - basically this means to promote your links/sites so they show up in the first pages of a search engine...I am guessing that in relation to article writing, it's either to promote your article or writing about SEO...I am sorry that I probably haven't explained this properly but I am only learning this myself as I am trying to do seo with my 2 websites i have bought recently.
