Do You Think The Commonwealth Games 2010 Will Go Ahead?

We've all been reading or watching the news about the latest goings-on in India regarding their lack of preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Athletes all over the world are voicing their concerns and some may even pull out of the event altogether.
What would I do? Well, I'm not being funny (and I do not wish to offend anybody) but why is everyone so surprised at the conditions over in India? What did they expect?
To be honest, I'm surprised it's being staged there in the first place. Yes, it's a developing country and it is to be applauded for that..but it still has a long way to go in regards to sanitation that we in the West take for granted.
What do you think? If you were an athlete would you go?
I wouldn't.

Hi Janey,
No offence taken, but how many times have you come to India, or is your knowledge about the sanitation facilities and hygiene in India just from the newspapers and tabloids?

I guess you have the answer in hiccup's response serubhail. He is right too. In fact, if it wasn't for journalists and the media in general no-one would know about the true conditions until they GOT THERE!

Hi Hic Cup (8058),
I was not defending India's sloppiness but was just asking a question to Janey. Yes-India has shown extreme incompetence in preparing for the commonwealth games. I am in full agreement here. But a pigpen hic, that's maybe a little over the line.
Again terrorist attacks surely can't be clubbed together as India's fault. Even the US has had its share-the twin towers terrorist attack.
As for OH&S, I would like to see once the condition of the aborigine settlements in Australia where the organization is based. Let's see in what conditions do the original natives of that great country live now and what OH&S has done to help. The BBC unfortunately does not focus on such issues, because it is a profit making organization and pictures of the homeless in India or a undernourished child in Namibia increases viewership.
But hic, you are on the button when you say that India has screwed up badly and that too a royal screw. lol

Hi Guys! I tend to agree with hiccup on this occasion. India HAS had plenty of time to sort everything out but they haven't done so. In actual fact, I know that delegates weren't allowed in the buildings a few days ago..just were shown the outside. That should've rang alarm bells for a start. Countries that have experience of building things should've got together and overseen everything from the beginning.
I believe child labour has been involved in this as well. Not good.

hi (hiccup),
i admit that the preparation are not what you are expecting ... but question is if you are athlet are you ready to play? ...... as per my concerns you are evaluating only one side and giving your decision.

Hi Janey... I am an Indian and I feel sorry that you had to write this post... I know things have become as bad as they could be... It is the Corrupt System (yet again) that has brought us the unbearable shame. I heard some players have already backed out... Trust me, those who have messed up things here, will pay for it... I feel really stupid and ashamed... :(
SORRY!!!

Hello mr_pearl. I'm sorry that you feel ashamed.
Please don't feel that way, it's not your fault. Like you say, it is the corrupt system that is to blame, not the "ordinary folk" of India, such as your good self. It's the general public I feel sorry for as I'm in no doubt that all of you were looking forward to the Commonwealth Games being held in your great country..rather like the South Africans and their World Cup earlier this year.
If they allow help from outside I reckon it could all be sorted out in time..but, unfortunately, it's all been left a bit late for any action to be taken.
You will always have a friend in me, don't worry about that.

Quite simply no I wouldn't go and although it's a crying shame I think the games should be called off. It is plainly obvious for whatever reason the facilities, new developments etc etc are neither ready or in a fit state to be staging such an important event and there is no way for another country to take on the burden at this late stage.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, the Indians have been left to do it all themselves thinking that they can..and they can't, they don't have the experience of building on this scale. All this reminds me of the Moscow Olympics..in 1980 was it? Boycotting for different reasons but it ended up being a sham of a Games and this will too if so many pull out.
I only hope the London Olympics 2012 lives up to all the hype!

Yup you are right...atleast there should be some decent conditions if not excellent, athletes do need a good place to live, practice, to hang about, cleaner area...so that they can refresh, practice, relax...if the conditions are good then it makes sense...if not then there is no point..
having said all that i think the commonwelath games would progress but may be hampered...need to wait and watch.

I think it's the "cleanliness" factor many are concerned about. Frightened of germs spreading, maybe?
