Facebook - who are all these people wanting to be my friends?

I finally did a facebook profile, and I'm officially on. Now I am getting requests for friendship from people I don't know. Sure, if I met them physically I wouldn't mind, but I don't recognize any of these people, and the profiles don't show any kind of hint as to why they want to be friends with a cranky judgmental old man like me.
Is this is what some people do? Just send out friend requests to random people?

What buttons do you see? Is it ADD FRIEND or CONFIRM? My cousin who was new before had mistaken them as people wanting to be added, and was bragging that she got a lot of friend request. I told her that it's a suggestion not a friend request. People will appear on friend suggestion according to your profile information. Like if you have the same hometown, same school you've attended, same location, etc. It's really random profiles matching your information.

I believe it is prudent to tell you only add or approve friends which you really know. I do recommend not to approve those you do not know at all. There are a lot of cases that will annoy you if you are not careful enough.
Make sure you check your privacy setting and take care of it. It's a bit difficult, but it's worth doing.

Thank you for the reminder - I had several things that was on "Everyone" and I'll have to learn more to see what I want to share publicly. Maybe just posts.
Looks like the privacy settings are at http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy when one is logged into their account.

I used to add people whom i did not know. But now i am very selective as i really cant trust people.

Are you sure you are not seeing PEOPLE YOU MAY KNOW? They have a box on the site or something when you search and since you type where you are located city and you may add your highschool or college or something... facebook finds PEOPLE YOU MAY KNOW. They do not want to know you but facebook thinks you may know them. If people want to add you there will be a message saying on the right hand side under events saying REQUESTS .. 1 friend request or something...

Oh, yes, "People You May Know." - I'll have to become aware of that. I didn't see anything firsthand, but maybe there is something in my profile that matched something else.
Dang bloody hell, life was easier before I registered on that anti-christ site!
