What is an easy definition of democrat or republican

I have listened to debates but I am very confused about what the difference is between democrat and republican. I have searched on the net for answers but come up even more confused what is a simple explanation of the difference between democrat and republican.

banasree explanation is a fine example of what the true meaning for each party is. However the world today is being so critical that this is why so many are opting to stay neutral if they even vote anymore. Most people ask say middle of the road which I never understood how someone could be in the middle, but having lived in this world for my years I certainly do now.
