The spontaneous way in giving me the gift would be a major factor. See a just because says more to me than just here happy birthday and or mother's day. My partner for instance has a lovely way of calling me "doll", that alone wins him a 1000 points over.

I think just having a partner to do that would make it special. lol. I don't have a partner.

there are a lot of factors that could make a SIMPLE gift special for me- the way he handed or showed it to me (handed as a surprise and with a loving smile, or a kiss and a hug perhaps), what took him or how he got the gift for me (went all the way some place, time pressured just to get the gift for me), the uniqueness of the idea and how he associates the gift to my personality or how significant it is to our relationship (may be something that symbolizes our bond or some secret that only the two of us share). no amount of money can make a gift special if it's not given out of love. Cliche may be, but it's really the thought (and all the efforts) that counts.
