why are there people who crave for vices when they fall into problems?

such a pity if you crave for alcohol, cigarettes and even gambling when you have problems. why are there people who do this everytime or at least once when they come to a big trouble with anyone. specially when they have troubles with people who are important to them at the same time. is it right to go drunk when you didn't please your loved one? is it right to gamble when you have just lost a market bidding or something like that? what do you do when you come to this kind of crisis?
