My Goldfish keep making smacking noises on the surface of the water?

Does anyone know what this means? At first I thought it was just them trying to ask for more food, because they do get very excited as soon as get the food pot, and they very quickly eat it as if they haven't eaten for days, but after a few hours, they start doing the smacking noises again. They usually do this because they know it gets my attention, and I always go to see if they're alright, apart from being hungry, I really don't know why they're trying to get me attention. They only stop doing it if I ignore them for a whole day because they know I'm not responding to their smacking sounds...does anyone know why they do this (besides for food)?

We have only kept tropical fish, with a filter which also aeriates the water. We've naver had fish do this. It's possible that the position of your tank (ie good sun) might encourage more algae- which has happened to us. The only solution was to either move the tank or clean the sides/ gravel more often.

That is odd. The only fish that I have known to do that are mollies- they often come to the top for their oxygen. If you put your fingers in they suck it off them.

We have three comet goldfish - two are the orange variety that are about 2-3 inches big, they don't make the noises. The third one is about 5 inches big and used to be the yellow variety, but has gradually changed all white all over. As she's o big, she's been making these loud noises, the other two don't do it except the medium sized one has learnt to do it but not as loudly as the large one....
