It's against the law where we live. I wouldn't ever hitchhike and I'd never pick a hitchhiker up. Just isn't save. Years ago I use to see several hitchhikers but don't anymore. Most were on the side of the highway with a cardboard sign telling the drivers where they were going.

Its against the law to pick up hitchhikers in Canada too. It doesn't stop a lot of people. A lot of it doensnt happen in the big cities. I'm from Vancouver and I rarely ever see hitchhikers. However up in the kootneys, and on Vancouver Island I see a lot of hitchhikers. A lot of them are hippies.

It's not safe to pick up hitchhiker. You do not know this person, he could be a serial killer or something. He may be armed and an attempt of taking your vehicle. As you can see the odds of a hitchhiker being an angel is non existent. If you want to press your luck go ahead and give hitchhiker a ride, sooner or later your luck will run out and you will be static.

This is very true that there is a risk to picking up hitchhikers. Most hitchhikers are normal. I know a lot of people who have done it. However, its that one bad one that you really don't want to get.

When I visited Australia at the age of 20 years old there was a backpacker murderer that the news was covering at that time. He picked on hitch hikers and that was very frighting. So much that I didn't wish to hitch hike. Likewise I own a car these days but I wouldn't let someone I didn't know into my car. I wouldn't choose to have a hitch hiker in my car with me. It could turn out to be a dangerous person. Yes, it is now worth taking that risk I think.
I have hitch hiked twice in my life and I was in my early 30s. I did it to get out of a challenging situation like there wasn't a bus at all. When I visited Croatia I was staying at a campsite. My travel guide book said that the national park was a 1km walk. So I began walking but it turned out to be 15km! I was tired and hitched back to the campsite. I got in a car with four friendly people from Hungary. The other time I had been sitting up all night at the airport until dawn. Then at dawn I got a ferry over to an island in French Polynesia. We found out we had missed the only bus that would have taken us to the campsite! With two English guys I hitched to the campsite. We rode in the back of a pick up truck.
Since getting attacked on a lonely beach when I was in my mid 30s I am more careful with my safety. I won't go hitch hiking again because that is really risky.

Thats really sad that you got attacked. Where were you traveling when this happened?
I was at a festival this summer and got sexually assaulted. It was pretty upsetting.. but I was lucky and the person finally stopped before it could go too far.
At the same festival I gave a hitchhiker a ride. We were both volunteers and we were waiting for our cheques for 4 hours together. We were chatting. He was saying how he was worried because he needed to hitch to Nelson. I told him I could give him a ride there because I was going that way.
I also gave someone I met online a ride up to the festival. But we chatted a bit before we went and I looked up her facebook. I have yet to pick up a traditional hitchhiker by the side of the road.

Where I live it is not advisable to ever pick up hitchhikers, and no, I would never hitch a ride. It is a good way to get killed or maimed, I think. Sometimes a person pretends to be alone but if someone stops they have an accomplice who runs up and overpowers the hapless driver. In my view it is just not worth taking a chance. If someone is in trouble, I would call some authority to come help them, but I would not try to assist them myself.

I hitchhiked 2 or 3 times and I have to admit it was stupid.
One guy was talking all crazy and I knew he wanted to fool around but i turned him down and luckily he dropped me off were I wanted to go.
The other time I got stranded going home and I caught a ride at a gas station.
I never do it again though it's very scary. I walk or take a cab or bus before I stick my thumb out again.

Thanks for your honest response. I've never done it but I think if I was stuck I would do it.

I agree. I was always taught not to. I have met so many people in the past year who do hitchhike though. Its very strange to me.

I have both hitched and given lifts to hitchers many times. The danger is exagerated, you probably take more risk crossing a road

Actually the biggest risk you can take with your life is getting into a car in the first place.... no matter who is driving.

I would never pick up a hitchhiker because it just isn't safe these days. I see people hitchhiking all the time and I don't understand how anyone can pick some of these people up. Some of them look so scary and grubby that I wouldn't trust them to not beat me up and steal my car, if I'm lucky to just get beaten up.
And then these people who have signs that show where they are going and some of them are going all the way across country. How do they get rides all that way? The other day my daughter and I were driving to work on the highway and there was this guy hitchhiking with 6 big bags. Those big duffel bags guys use for hockey equipment. The only person who could pick him up is someone with a truck. And he had a sign that said a city that was about 2000 miles away. All I could think of was that he was moving across the country.
But with all those bags, it would be pretty hard to get picked up. They certainly would never have fit in my little accent car. And then as we drove past him he gave us the finger for not stopping. I don't need the trouble with someone like that.
Cheers my friend and happy mylotting,
Chris

Hi. Monkeyrose. I have never hitchhiked before. I am very scared to though. I have asked a few strangers in my life for a ride. I will never do this ever again. It really scares me when I ride in a car with someone that I don't know. My thumb would always be down when I need a ride somewhere. These days, you can't just trust anyone! People are not what they may seem to be!
Hitchhiking is just far too risky to do!

I never pick up hichhikers at all. my dad gave me the same advice a long time ago. when some one ask me for a ride, I will say I do not give rides to strangers.
my dad had once told me that it was not safe to pick up hichikers becase they may beat you up and steal your car. therefore I never have. I do not recommed it unless you can trust that person.

No way. I won't hitchhike and never ever pick one, regardless of gender, age or situation. I am probably paranoid but that doesn't change the fact that it's not safe to hitchhike or pick a hitchhike. People are scary these days. You don't know who you'll end up sitting next to with.

Hitchchiking can be dangerous for both drivers and hitchhikers. It is not a safe or wise practice to hitchhike or pick up a hitchhhiker. you just don;t know what kind of situation will arise from accepting a ride from a stranger or giving one.1 person likes this
