The doctors put me on a lot of vitamins

As I go to the doctors lately, they are prescribing me a lot of vitamins. I am now taking a medicine called metanx that is a vitamin, iron tablets, vitamin B12 and folic acid. These are supposed to help speed my healing and make me stronger. I suppose taking vitamins is better than being on stronger medicines but it seems like I could take a multivitamin that would be for all these. The doctors say that these vitamins will help with my circulation because of my diabetes. Has anyone else ever heard of vitamins being prescribed for health conditions like diabetes?

Hi Linda, I have not heard of this but it does sound like a better route to go rather than the stronger meds. I have a couple of good research books on herbal & vitamin remedies and other natural healings. Whenever I have a problem, I look it up and see what if anything I can take rather than going in to the doctors. I have never had a doctor prescribe me vitamins but then again, I don't very often go to the doctors.

doctors give you strong medicines to get recovered quickly, they suggest some vitamins, minerals and food suppliments but whatever they give is not completely natural so i wont recommend anyone to take any vitamins, proteins n all.i strongly, highly recommend Nutrilite for people bcause they have 800 acre farm and they do organic farming,no chemical use, polution free. And the percentage you get is great.search on youtube for nutrilte and visit the site too.and you can contact me on chanchal.chopde@gmail.com Have a nice time !!

I have never never heard of this vitamin until your discussion so I looked it up and this is what I found Metanx is a prescription medical food and has a unique formulation providing the active forms of folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 to manage the distinct nutritional requirements of diabetic neuropathy patients who often experience numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in their feet. So from the sounds of your discussion it looks like this is a good medication for you. Here is the link where I found this, maybe you can get further answers that may arise while on the medication. http://www.metanx.com/WhatIsMetanx Good luck to you while on this medication and I hope my link helps a bit.

well if your doctor prescribes you with specific vitamins, that means that you only need specific vitamins. because if you take a multivitamin and it contains your vitamin needs and more, it could lead to vitamin toxicity. too much vitamin is not good for you, it could lead to dry skin and the like.

I would look up or ask a dietician what sort of foods you should be eating, ones which are naturally rich in vitamins that you lack. I have a friend who is diabetic and also has Crohns disease, but he eats the right foods as part of a balanced diet and has gotten rid of the supplements. He says he feels great. I found this which backs up the theory to some degree... http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/dietandnutrition/feature/vitamins.htm

I have RA and once i went in hurting bad. I had gotten weak. Had blood work and she put me on a lot of B for a while. I got much better, although i asked her about continuing the B and she said no, but i still add non prescription and my muscle tone has gotten better. I truly wish i knew more about vitamins, as all are important, but I do not know which ones they are and what to use for what.
