is there such a thing as "the new black"?

Every year, designers and fashion magazines make the pronouncement as to what "the new black" will be. This year, dark jewel tones--dark red, navy blue, deep purple--are "the new black" for Fall 2010. Gray, brown, purple--these have all been "the new black" recently. My question is, can there be such a thing as "the new black?" Let's face it, black goes with everything, can be worn in every season, can be dressy, casual, risque, chic, or business-like, can be worn with almost any other color, looks good on most people, makes people look taller and thinner, helps make jewelry and accessories "pop"--the list goes on and on. Realistically, how can any other color come close to serving the many purposes and pleasing as many people as black does? What do you think?

I think such a thing comes along very rarely, but there are some other neutrals, such as navy and grey that are almost as versatile I think, but not quite. So this saying is really more of a cliche than something that has any truth to it.

I agree--it is nothing more than a marketing tool. Navy blue is very versatile, too, especially because there are numerous blue shoe options, and also because a lot of adult jeans are navy blue. But still not as useful as black!

Hi! To me I like black and the new black, I like it too. Dark colors are appealing to the figure and it brings mystery, lol.

I like dark colors too, but tougher to match the shoes sometimes, don't you think?

I like neutral colors, but I don't think anything can replace black. in fact, I must be behind the times as far as fashion goes because I had never even heard of the phrase "the new black" before this discussion! Hmmm.. I do like a lot of the new colors that they come up with, the dark, fall colors that actually look a lot better in clothes than you'd assume they would. But I still love black and always will!

I now hear the term "the new black" in casual conversation--and not among people who are particularly fashionable. I LOVE dark fall colors myself, and not only for clothes--I like them for home decorating, too. But I will never tire of black!
