I have a laptop in our office of that automatically shuts down itself after being idle for about 15 minutes. At first, I thought it was just a result of wrong configuration or something about the software part. But after a month, another laptop with the same model of HP Compaq NX9000 is experiencing the same problem. It never happens that the computer shuts down during in use but when it became idle and trying wake it up thinking that the monitor was only turned off, the laptop was actually turned off already. I tried to search this problem on the net but I wasn't lucky enough to find a forum discussing the same problem. Is there any of you my co-MyLotters experienced similar problem or even something like this? Please share your experience or better a solution that you came up to after experiencing something like this. -)

I think this is probably because the Windows 7 that you use is Windows 7 RC which has already expired in June 1, 2010 but I'm not sure. If your computer shuts down every 2 seconds and the desktop is empty this could be the case. If that's the case then you can either switch the the Windows 7 full version or go back to the old operating system that you used to use.

I'm sorry I mistyped. It should be: If your computer shuts down every 2 "hours"

Sorry i forgot to mention that it was using Windows XP pro. About the 2 hours auto shutdown, I also experience that to my evaluation copy of Windows server 2008. I think that's not the cause of the laptop shut down after 10 or 15 minutes. But thanks for the idea. -)

Have you check the configuration on laptop power saving, maybe your laptop were set to shut down after 15 minutes idle. Maybe you should turn on a screen saver during idle phase. Or maybe it have battery problem ?? If there are another laptop with the same model faced the same problem, I think you should take it back to the seller and ask for guaranted repairing. I never had such problem, but I hope your laptop will fixed soon.

I also thought that it was only in the power settings but after I checked it, it was always the same. I have even selected the "always on" option and "never" to other settings like turn off monitor, hard disk, and stand by. Still, it's the same. I didn't think about the batter though because it was plugged all day. Anyway, thanks for dropping by. Maybe it should already be checked by a technician. -)

I have had my Compaq Presario CQ50-215NR Notebook PC for 3 years and it has awlways shut down after being idle a short while. I have the Screen Saver 'on' and all Power Settings are 'never.' It does get frustrating but now I Save my documnt before I leave the Laptop for while. Most times when rebooting the message comes up 'turned off incorrectly' [something like this], and am asked 'start in normal mode' [something like this]. Laptop DOES come on every time so I just live with the problem. It must be a problem with Compaq Laptops I guess. Ronn Johnson

It's definitely in the settings. I always go in there when I get a laptop to make sure the settings are configured the way I want it (turn my computer monitor off after 2 or 5 minutes of idle, I don't remember which one, and put it to sleep mode after 15). The option is there to help you, not annoy you.

Yes I have already checked those settings but it still shuts down. I don't think it only sleeps because I would still have power on the laptop and it start from booting again not just waking up.

I have already checked the power settings configuration but still no luck. Maybe taking it to the service center should really be the next step.

Someone must have enabled the setting for power off if idle for 15 minutes increase the timer or disable it(the feature).

The user of the laptop was set to restricted user. I wasn't able to change the power settings using his account so I login to administrator account to change the power settings. All settings are set to "never" but the shutdown still occurs.
