How can we NOT care? Is it the secret to life?

Is it really possible for man to sometimes just don't care about what they see or encounter on a day to day basis...? like their eyes and feelings would just shut down when they see something going on so they don't get 'affected' by not caring about anything else but themselves?
Is this the way things should be for all of us so we can focus mor eon ourselves, than what we see, than others, etc?
For me.. it is really hard not to care - a simply old man slowly walking in front of me - i can't just NOT care and pretend i have not seen him - so even if i was running late this morning i helped him, waited for him to be at least comfortable... while others act even annoyed that he is causing delay in the escalator line! How can people just not care?!

First they do not understand. Second they are selfish. Third, they don't know how God will take care of them if they do care about others. These three factors are missing from most people nowadays. But trust me, there are still a lot of people who care, including me.

Yes, people turns more and more "not care" to others and what's going on in their surrounding cause they have many problems to focus and solve these days. Nature, government, rich people, religion and faith all have its share in creating this phenomenon.
God help me not to be one of them, but I try to understand them, too.

You have such a kind heart chiyosan.. Well i guess there are really others who really don't care what the others are doing or what is happening around them. They pretend to be blind and act as is nothing happens just so they wouldn't be delayed with what they are doing or are going to do. They don't mind if an old man may stumble or a blind man crossing the street just as long as they can do whatever they have to do. I think there are really people who don't really care at all. By nature they don't feel like caring to others. Well i can say that what they have done will always come back to them..like karma. For once in their lives I know that they too will need help and be cared for by others. But unfortunately, because they don't have the heart of caring, they will never experienced being cared to.
