Have a self help book ever helped you?

I recently decided to buy a book I've seen on amazon called Shift: A woman's guide to transformation. This whole journey started after I saw these words on a magazine: Self-actualization-A journey into yourself...I decided to look it up on amazon and see what books came up. Lots of info on the subject. I was discussing it with my sister, who claims she has read hundreds of books on the topic and they never help you. I'm looking for enlightenment. I think this is a great place to start. Anyone have any feedback on this?

I think it is really up to the reader whether or not a self help book will help. If you read one and do nothing about what you have read, then you have wasted your money. But if you read one and make even one change or take to heart one piece of advice, then it will help you.

I'm hoping this one will be the one that gets me thinking..It was rated 5 stars by 12 people so that has to say something about it right?

amazon reviews are usually pretty accurate. If it got a good rating there it should be a good book.

When it is selled on a trusted website and there are good ratings on the book, than indeed you can be almost 100% sure that the book will be 'good' or maybe 'very good'. I hope you enjoy reading the book ;)

I can say yes, self help books can help. Among my favorites are Dale Carnegie books and Tom Hopkins. I learn a lot from them and it improves my selling techniques.( I'm also into sales)

Dale Carnegie-one I've been wanting to read.."How to win friends and influence people" I've heard it's a valuable read! Thanks for sharing.

I never have read this particular book but I have read several that I feel like helped me. I can't think of any right offhand, though. I'm sorry I'm not much help.

I haven't come across a self-help book yet that has truly been a benefit to me. Sometimes the journey of finding yourself is better than what any book can ever do for you.

But sometimes books have these little "practice quizzes" or to do's that help...I know I've read a few Shirley Maclaine books that have inspired me quite a bit.

Most of the time, self help books are a waste of time and money. They are written not good and very expensive and with no 'real content'.
