Some Clarifications About Textbroker

I know that alot of people on here do work through Textbroker, but because I get asked these things alot, I am going to post them here where hopefully people can find them.
Textbroker is a third party "brokerage" firm. You work as an independent contractor and have no obligations to TB. They have no obligations to you. YOU are responsible for ALL the taxes and they do require that you send submit your tax information through fax or snail mail for verification. Yes this means you have to report it on your taxes, people!
To join Textbroker, you must be a US citizen.
Textbroker can be both easy and frustrating. Their system requires a sample writing when signing up to participate. The writing sample is used to derive a user rank. Approved users in good standing may be ranked 2,3,4, or 5 stars. 5 is the highest rank and seems to be relatively exclusive. Most decent writers, however, seem to rank as a 3 star or 4 star. One star status does exist, but it's reserved for people who have broken site rules or that may have been banned from the site.
The available assignments are also given star rankings, 2-5. You can be a 4 star and write a 2 star topic, but you will be completely unable to write a 5 star topic.
Doing Textbroker is ghostwriting, so if you're hoping to make a name for yourself, this is not necessarily the place for you. If you are looking to make money and don't care about your byline, then Textbroker is what you need. Textbroker just sets the most basic of guidelines and acts as a third party. You need a job, they find jobs, get the specifics, and post them. Then it's first come first serve. Articles can range from stuff that you would find on eHow, to boring website content, to blog posts. Sometimes you may even come across your sold works online later and be surprised! I know that I have and was!
2 star assignments are typically the lowest paying and easiest assignments in the pool. 5* articles are generally for professionals. There's never much action for the 5* writers - that's visible, but I'll get back to that in a minute.
Clients typically choose the topic that they need and turn in a list of instructions and a deadline. Once Textbroker has that information, they job is posted in the assignments area, and whoever clicks it first has the chance to either write the topic or drop it back into the pool. Typical things included in instructions are the use of proper grammar, keywords that must be used a certain amount of times, the use of a certain writing style, and min/max amount of words to be used. Some topics are easy peasy, others may require a little research, and other things really just seem to remain one of life's mysteries!
When an assignment is completed, you submit it and the client gets the chance to review it. If they are satisfied with the work, they accept it and Textbroker credits your account. Clients may rate your work as to how they feel your performance was in a way that you will be able to see it. If they are not satisfied, they are forced to give the writer at least one chance to revise the article and are supposed to tell the writers what they would like changed. The writer can then either revise it or dump it back into the pool. Clients may request as many revisions as they like, writers are never forced to revise. If you revise the article and the client is not satisfied, he may ask for another revision or reject it. Rejections do count against you, and any client may view your completed to rejection ratio on the site.
Okay so you've completed three little articles and made $7.85. Now you want to cash out and head over to your favorite fast food place. Well, you can't - not quite yet. The minimum payout on Textbroker is $10.00. Requests for payouts must be submitted by midnight on the 5th and 20th of each month. Although it may take up to 5 days for your Paypal account to receive the transfer. I've always gotten paid the next day, typically by 12pm CST. They pay ONLY through Paypal. So you would need to get or have a Paypal account, and if you intend to use the money to do anything but shop and pay some bills online, you'll need to see if you qualify to get a Paypal Linked Debit Card. If approved, they're fast and free to get. This will allow you to remove funds from your paypal account in the form of cash. Some ATMs do charge for using this card at their machines.
So, exactly how much money can be made?
A substantial amount.
Here's my payout chart from 3/20 - 4/20
04/20/2010 160.55 $ 0.00 $ 160.55 $ done - 04/21/2010
04/05/2010 213.08 $ 0.00 $ 213.08 $ done - 04/06/2010
03/20/2010 100.84 $ 0.00 $ 100.84 $ done - 03/21/2010
This week, I received a $190 payout on Tuesday. It's now Friday and my account is already back up to $80.00. I've written 511 total articles since I began in March, and nearly 300 of them have been just since September 25th and today.
Yes, Textbroker is legit! Hope that clears things up for some folks! :)

Wow, very well done! I also belong to Textbroker and I couldn't have said it better myself!
I haven't done anything recently because the research for me was taking too long, and I am just a 3. I never made it to a 4 because I mess up too much on my punctuation. I put commas in the wrong places and the such, and capitalize stuff that shouldn't be, haha. I did make "ok" money there though, and enjoyed it, but just haven't tried it in a while. Now you make me want to go back, lol! I did get positive ratings though from everyone and they liked my work...it was basically Textbroker itself who kept catching my mistakes, darn it.

Thank you!
I struggle mostly with my commas, and they always nail me on my utter refusal to capitalize the word internet. I rarely get called out on it, except in their written evaluations, which I always thought was strange.
Since I started at the end of last February, I've penned 1,180 articles for Textbroker alone. I didn't have internet for 2.5 months during the last year or for a two week time period during the holiday season. I've pulled in about $1,700 from Textbroker and about $120-$130 from other sites.
If cards are played just write, one can eek out a very very modest living from it. It meets my basic needs atm, and is more than many people's monthly social security and disability checks, so in my eyes I'm making off like a bandit.. and I'm what I consider to be a "picky" writer, when it comes to choosing what topics to select.

Holy Moly, you're doing great!! The most I made was around $60.00 one month and that was because they had articles I was interested in writing about.
I go for some of the craziest stuff, but it's stuff I have some interest in for one reason or another, but don't know a darn thing about them, lol! A few articles I've written were on 5 different Immune Boosters, The Babe Ruth story, How Football Started, Vietnam and Agent Orange, the Polar Ice Caps regarding Global Warming, How Diamonds are Created, and Super Volcano's.
I have to admit though, they were hard work and very time consuming, but I really learned alot and enjoyed putting the articles together.

To put it into a much better perspective, since I focus primarily on certain topics in the industry, the availability of those types of assignments on TB have seen a recent drought. Due to that fact and the fact that the flu kept me in bed later than usual most of last week, I made a whole $27.00
Now, today alone, I authored more than 30 articles, tripling last week's earnings in a single day. Sometimes, it's just plain out insane!

I know this is a few months old, but I actually ended up bookmarking this. I'm used to writing for other sites, so I just want to make sure I get this right. I just pick an assignment from the pool? I don't have to do any direct orders if I do not have the time, right? I need to add to my income, and have been thinking about joining Textbroker lately. Thanks!

Authors are given a ranking.. 2,3,4,5*.
5* are TOP notch,
Strong writers are usually ranked as a 4* writer.
All assignments are given rankings based on their difficulty... 2-5*. Authors can complete assignments at or below their * rank, but not above it... Although there are different ways to improve and become a higher ranked writer.
Direct Orders do not have to be accepted. In fact, they are usually given to authors by clients with whom they have established consistent ability, or they have perhaps contacted the client themselves.
My DO client was someone who regularly posted requests for specific content. I was surprised to find that the easy assignments were frequently left in the pool by others.. So I contacted the client. Now I receive 1-5 direct orders from them 5 or 6 days a week.
Good luck!

I have one more question if that's okay.
I'm really thinking of just going ahead and signing up this week to see how I like it. The writing sample we have to submit, can be an article that has already been published or no? I know sometimes with Bright Hub I'll submit one I have done before, but I'll uncheck the box allowing them to publish it. I just wanted to double check.
Thank you!

Wow! Thank you so much for this lengthy information post!! It means a lot.
The only thing that makes me worry about TB is the fact that they aren't BBB verified. Is this because they are a third party site?

I don't know why they aren't BBB verified, but alot of businesses aren't.
I've never had a problem with them. They list their payout to be between the 6th and the 10th of each month for the first one, the 21st and 25th for the second. I've always gotten them on the 6th and the 21st, usually by noon central time, but sometimes as late as 2:30pm.
I got my first Direct Order this week and made about $5, for less than 300 words on an easily researched topic.

Wow, that's some great information. I don't know if I would like the whole ghostwriting thing but I'll definitely go and check out the site. It looks like you can make some decent money with it. Do they have a referral program too? Maybe I'll add a link to them on my website. Thanks for a great post.
